August 16, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - Hope does not disappoint, because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts by the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us. - Romans 5:5
Reflection: The outpouring of the Spirit in our hearts brings about a change that is slow and hard won, but certain. It is a change that leads to the formation of the new person.
In this way, "we all attain to the unity of the faith and knowledge of the Son of God (Ephesians 4:13). - Pope Paul VI
Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit, Creator blest; enter my heart with flames of Your love. Burn away all that is selfish, and purify all that is precious.

August 16, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - Great is your faith! (Matthew 15:28)
Reflection: Only once in Matthew's Gospel did Jesus characterize someone as having great faith. It wasn't Peter, who professed Jesus as "the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Nor was it Joseph, who obeyed an angel and took Mary as his wife (1:24). No, Jesus reserved this term for an unnamed Gentile woman who wouldn't take no for an answer.
Jesus was in the territory of Tyre and Sidon when He met this woman. These cities, located south of modern-day Beirut, Lebanon, were the foremost Mediterranean seaports at the time. Evidently, the news of Jesus' miracles had traveled far beyond the borders of Israel, because this Canaanite mother was determined to approach Jesus personally on behalf of her tormented daughter.
This mother's strong faith stands in stark contrast to the inflexibility of the scribes and Pharisees. They had interrogated Jesus and His disciples about the fact that they didn't wash their hands before eating (Matthew 15:2). They had standards that Jesus had to meet before they would believe.
Conversely, the Canaanite woman was eager to believe. She was hoping that Jesus would be accommodating toward her despite her religious status. Even when He initially rebuked her, she persisted. Rather than being offended, she remained open. She believed He had the power and the willingness to work a miracle. As a result, she, a Gentile, experienced His love and power: her daughter "was healed from that hour" (Matthew 15:28).
This woman's trust endeared her to Jesus - and to readers of Matthew's Gospel ever since. Just as Jesus commended her faith, He welcomes all of us when we come to Him with humble faith. He wants to shower His healing and "mercy upon all" (Romans 11:32). So if you hesitate to bring your needs to Jesus - or to return to the sacraments after time away - let this mother's faith strengthen yours! - The Word Among Us, August 2026
Prayer: "Jesus, I believe in You!"

August 15, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - Who is this that comes forth like the dawn, as beautiful as the moon, as resplendent as the sun? - Song of Songs 6:10
Reflection: On this feast of the glorious Assumption of Mary we celebrate the glorification of her immaculate soul and of her virginal body, of her perfect conformity to the risen Christ.
This is the same glorification and destiny of those whom Christ made His brothers and sisters. - Pope Paul VI
Prayer: Blessed Virgin Mary, intercede for your children. Teach me to follow the ways of your Son with ever greater devotion, and lead me home to heaven where you reign with your Son in glory.

August 15, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - The last enemy to be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:26)
Reflection: Have you ever wondered what eternal life will be like? Today's feast of the Assumption can give you a glimpse. We celebrate that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary, the Mother of God, was taken into heaven, both body and soul. This was a great grace that Mary received, but it is also a wondrous sign to every believer. As St. Paul writes in today's second reading, "Just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life" (1 Corinthians 15:22).
Yes, we will all die, and our bodies will decay. But that's not the end of our story. For, as St. Paul assures us, the risen Christ is "the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20). Because of His resurrection, we, too, will rise, body and soul, when Jesus comes again. The "last enemy," death, will finally be destroyed (15:26)!
The wonder of this feast is that Mary, who was free from original sin and who bore the Son of God in her womb, did not have to wait until Jesus' return to receive this new, resurrected life. It all happened at her assumption!
Heaven is our destiny as well. As the Catechism tells us, Mary's assumption is "an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians" (966). Our resurrected bodies will retain our five senses: we will be able to perceive beauty, hear beautiful music, and feel the embrace of a loved one. At the same time, we won't have to contend with disordered passions like hatred or resentment, and we will never again fall sick or die.
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord!" - Luke 1:46
Today, let this truth fill you with hope. Let it help you to cling even more closely to the Lord, especially when life here on earth seems hard. Keep your eyes fixed on the great plans God has for you. Eternal life will be more amazing than you can ever imagine. Just ask your Mother Mary! - The Word Among Us, August 2026
Prayer: "Mary, Mother of God, pray that I would place all my hope in your Son, Jesus, and the life He has won for me!"

August 14, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have understanding and power. - Proverbs 8:14
Reflection: When we dedicate ourselves to Mary, we become instruments in her hands just as she is an instrument in God's hands.
Let us then be guided by her for she will provide for the needs of body and soul and overcome all difficulties and anxieties. - St. Maximilian Kolbe
Prayer: Dear Jesus, in all my trials and difficulties, let me have recourse to You through Your holy Mother. Grant that she may comfort me and lead me to You.

August 14, 2026 Meditation - Jesus loves greatly those who imitate Him in love toward His most pure Mother. - St. Maximilian Kolbe
Reflection: Devotion to the Immaculate - St. Maximilian Kolbe taught all throughout his life that it was essential to pass through Mary to come to Jesus. She, being the most loving of God's creatures, is our most powerful intercessor - but also the one who reveals to us what it truly means to be a disciple of Christ.
The Blessed Mother, through her surrender to God's call, made Christ present in this world.
Prayer: Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

August 13, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - [God] has given us a new birth... into an imperishable, unsullied, and unfading inheritance, kept in heaven for you. - 1 Peter 1:3-4
Reflection: You have within you everything that you need to purchase the Kingdom of Heaven.
Joy will be purchased by your sorrow, rest by your labor, glory by your humiliation, and eternal life by your passing death. - St. Augustine
Prayer: Loving Father, teach me how to make every event on earth lay up treasures for me in heaven. Help me to endure sorrows, labors, humiliations, and death willingly so as to attain heaven.
