August 15, 2026 - Scripture Meditation - The last enemy to be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:26)
Reflection: Have you ever wondered what eternal life will be like? Today's feast of the Assumption can give you a glimpse. We celebrate that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary, the Mother of God, was taken into heaven, both body and soul. This was a great grace that Mary received, but it is also a wondrous sign to every believer. As St. Paul writes in today's second reading, "Just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life" (1 Corinthians 15:22).
Yes, we will all die, and our bodies will decay. But that's not the end of our story. For, as St. Paul assures us, the risen Christ is "the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep" (1 Corinthians 15:20). Because of His resurrection, we, too, will rise, body and soul, when Jesus comes again. The "last enemy," death, will finally be destroyed (15:26)!
The wonder of this feast is that Mary, who was free from original sin and who bore the Son of God in her womb, did not have to wait until Jesus' return to receive this new, resurrected life. It all happened at her assumption!
Heaven is our destiny as well. As the Catechism tells us, Mary's assumption is "an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians" (966). Our resurrected bodies will retain our five senses: we will be able to perceive beauty, hear beautiful music, and feel the embrace of a loved one. At the same time, we won't have to contend with disordered passions like hatred or resentment, and we will never again fall sick or die.
"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord!" - Luke 1:46
Today, let this truth fill you with hope. Let it help you to cling even more closely to the Lord, especially when life here on earth seems hard. Keep your eyes fixed on the great plans God has for you. Eternal life will be more amazing than you can ever imagine. Just ask your Mother Mary! - The Word Among Us, August 2026
Prayer: "Mary, Mother of God, pray that I would place all my hope in your Son, Jesus, and the life He has won for me!"
