As collectors, we often admire the finished pieces: the skillets, Dutch ovens, stove parts, and castings that survived the decades. Today on Juneteenth, it's worth remembering some of the hands that made them.

Long before freedom reached all Americans, Black workers played a critical role in the nation's iron industry.

Many labored in furnaces, foundries, and ironworks. Originally not by choice, but by slavery. Later they took their new freedom as an opportunity to develop skilled trades that helped build the foundations and backbone of American manufacturing.

Juneteenth reminds us not only to celebrate freedom, but also to honor the workers whose contributions helped forge the history we preserve today.

I can't get over how cool this is. A Masonic cookie/cracker mold that appears to have been made with a hand carved master pattern.

Items like this don't pop up frequently but, of course, there were a bunch of different ones in the recent Foundation Auction.

A friend won a lot of 3 and gifted me this one out of the bunch since he knew I'm a mason.

The real fun part will be testing it out whenever I can find a cookie recipe from the right time frame.

I only bid on one lot in the entire auction, and somehow not only did I win it, but it stayed under $100!!!πŸ†

Lot 1271: an unmarked Lodge toy coal hod (bucket) with three mystery mini toy pots.

To be completely honest, I couldn't have cared less about the extra toys. I only had eyes for the coal hod. πŸ˜…

About two years ago, I had the opportunity to visit with a member of the Lodge family. She showed me the toy coal hod she had as a little girl, and that visit turned into a research opportunity. I was able to take measurements, study the design, and learn the biggest identifying feature to watch for: the positioning dots on the bottom.

Since then, I've been aggressively hunting for one.

The problem? Sellers rarely provide the photos or details needed to identify these little toys correctly, so finding one has been far more difficult than you'd think. 😑

So imagine my surprise when I was helping prepare auction items and spotted this one sitting in Lot 1271. I knew exactly what it was the moment I saw those markings. 🀯

Now the hunt is over... at least until the next impossible Lodge Cast Iron piece shows up. πŸ˜‰

Since my "real quick" video turned into 8 minutes of me rambling, here's my haul from the Lodge Cast Iron Foundation Auction last week.

Obviously I'm over the moon. πŸ˜‰πŸ€£ (Go watch my video πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ)

But seriously, some crazy cool stuff. I'll do some highlights this week and share what history I can.

Which item do you want to see first????

If you ask me what my favorite part of these Lodge Museum of Cast Iron trips are each year, the answer will never change: the friends I get to see!

I'm terrible about taking photos, I seriously need to get better about it. But here’s a few good ones at least!!

Levi from Dinkys Auction Center , we couldn't have pulled off this auction without them. More to come about that this week.

Matt from Orphaned Iron , my absolute ride or die. He barely survived my snoring this trip!

Louis, from Lewis Winburn after I hauled him all over town (mostly willingly) for adventures and stories.

And a living legend, Mr. Larry from O’Neil Family Cast Iron Collection who even had time to share a meal with Louis and I. (Plus Marg who wasn't feeling photogenic)

$7,000!!!!!!!

No, that's not a typo. And believe it or not, that's a STEAL for a Griswold spider. They can fetch uppers of 10k on a good day with a hot crowd.

How far off were you???
