The Spectrum tuning Conundrum. Warm White at 100%? We wouldn’t do it. 🌞🌱. Tune to a “HPS” spectrum…Don’t do it!!🤮🙇🙇🙇
Yes—we include a warm white channel. No—we don’t recommend running it at 100%. It’s there to fine-tune the spectrum and adjust the cool:white balance—not become the spectrum.
The first thing we say in our Spectrum Tuning Handbook is:
“Most growers will do more harm than good with spectrum tuning.”
Unless you truly understand photobiology, you’re often better off leaving a true full spectrum alone. Spectrum tuning is probably beneficial for 5% of growers—not 95%.
Here’s why…
Plants don’t just respond to one color. They have multiple pigment absorption peaks and photoreceptors spread across the spectrum. Chlorophyll a and b, carotenoids, cryptochromes, phototropins, and phytochromes all respond to different wavelengths and work together to regulate photosynthesis, morphology, terpene production, and cannabinoid expression.
Push warm white (red) too far, and you start feeding one part of the system while starving the others. More red isn’t automatically better. Once the spectrum becomes overly red-heavy, you reduce the balance of blue, green, and other critical wavelengths that plants evolved under.
The science backs it up:
📚 “Green light is as efficient as red light at driving photosynthesis and penetrates deeper into dense canopies.” — Smith et al., Journal of Experimental Botany
📚 “Plants grown under solely red light often display abnormal morphology and reduced performance compared with plants grown under broader spectra containing blue and green wavelengths.” — Hogewoning et al., 2010
📚 Magagnini et al. (2018) found HPS produced significantly lower THC than both LED treatments—up to 38% less THC in one experiment.
Spectrum isn’t about maximizing red. It’s about maximizing balance.
That’s exactly why our warm white channel is designed for small adjustments—not to run at 100%.
Spectrum matters. Science matters. Balance wins. 🦣🌞
