Well it didn’t make the weekend. This is what I mean when I say the Graffiti Task Force in Santa Maria can’t keep up. I’m gonna paint it again and install a big light and see if that helps.

Painted and covered up. I hope it last a little while. 🙏

Just a little community outreach. Our shop is constantly getting graffiti on it. And the last one was pretty big foul words. The city of Santa Maria has a great graffiti task force. But there is no way they can keep up with it all. But if it is not cleaned up I get fined. I see the city is trying to keep up with it. The police have real issues out there. And doing a stake out catching TAGGERS is not cost effective. The real issue is community. Community in the since of parents parenting, kids and parents having repercussions for what there kids damage. I dropped $300.00 not counting time lost not making money at my business. With that said time line will be a week before there is graffiti on it again. And thank you to all the teachers at Alvin School that thanked me while I was painting this morning. And thank you to the teacher that reached out last night with the concern and offer to help. And of course thank you to my friend Ben at Oak Knoll Hardware for the early morning hook up of paint and new spray gun.

Thank you to for our beautiful chalk painting today at the annual OCAF Chalk Festival.

Tonight Chris took to the Santa Maria City Council Meeting to educate the Mayor and City Council members on AB1346 and the potential ramifications of this bill on local small businesses. We may not be able to change the law from here (we will try though!) but knowledge is power and helping our leaders understand what is happening, helps influence things locally.

Happy 2025, everyone!

Eco-Friendly? Not So Fast!
Switching to electric tools may sound like a green solution, but let’s take a closer look at the hidden costs:

1. The Environmental Toll of Lithium Mining
Lithium mining requires enormous water resources, draining local ecosystems. For example, it takes approximately 500,000 gallons of water to produce just one ton of lithium. This has caused severe water shortages in areas like the Atacama Desert, threatening local agriculture and wildlife.
Mining operations leave behind toxic waste, which can contaminate water supplies and harm ecosystems.

2. Short Battery Lifespans = More Toxic Waste
Electric tool batteries degrade after a few years, meaning constant replacements. Many end up in landfills, where they can leak harmful chemicals like lithium, cobalt, and nickel into the soil and groundwater.
The world currently lacks sufficient infrastructure for large-scale recycling of lithium batteries, compounding the issue.

3. Energy Isn’t Always Green
Charging electric tools often relies on fossil-fuel-powered grids, especially in areas where renewable energy hasn’t been fully adopted. The carbon footprint of generating this electricity undermines the environmental benefits of going electric.

4. Cost and Efficiency
Electric tools may have lower emissions at the point of use, but they’re often less powerful, have shorter runtimes, and require multiple batteries to match the productivity of gas-powered tools. This adds to the financial burden for small businesses.

?What’s the Solution?
We need a holistic approach that balances:

-Supporting small businesses with adequate funding and realistic timelines for transitions.
-Investing in cleaner, more efficient battery technologies.
-Expanding battery recycling infrastructure to reduce toxic waste.

Electric isn’t perfect, and gas-powered tools have their flaws. But we shouldn’t shift the environmental cost without addressing the root issues. Let’s stop pretending there’s a one-size-fits-all solution and instead focus on practical, sustainable options that work for everyone.

Gas-powered tools are undeniably polluters, but let’s not overlook the hidden cost of transitioning to electric tools. The lithium mining required for electric batteries brings its own environmental toll:

Environmental Damage: Lithium extraction can drain vital water supplies, especially in fragile ecosystems like Chile’s Atacama Desert, leaving the land barren and impacting local agriculture.

Human Costs: Many lithium mines operate in developing countries where communities face displacement, exploitation, and unsafe working conditions.

Carbon Footprint: Mining and transporting lithium use significant fossil fuel energy, releasing greenhouse gases.

California’s AB 1346 mandates small businesses bear the financial burden of transitioning to electric tools without addressing these global issues. Landscapers and other small businesses are being hit with higher costs, shorter tool lifespans, and lower efficiency.

We need clean air solutions that account for all factors—environmental, social, and economic. Let’s advocate for balanced policies that protect both the planet and the hardworking small businesses that keep our communities beautiful.

We all want cleaner air, but California’s AB 1346 overlooks one key thing: the small businesses who keep our parks, schools, and homes maintained.

We support sustainability, but let’s push for:

Realistic timelines
Affordable solutions
Better subsidies for zero-emission tools
It’s time to collaborate, not suffocate small businesses with impossible mandates.

Who’s Paying the Price?
AB 1346 might sound like progress, but here’s the reality:

❌ $30 million in funding sounds like a lot, but it’s barely enough fro cover the 50,000 small businesses affected in California.
❌ Electric equipment doesn’t last as long and costs much more upfront.
❌ Emergency response tools, like gas-powered generators, are at risk of becoming impractical.

Let’s advocate for achievable solutions that don’t crush our local landscapers and small businesses. Call your local assemblyman and tell him/her how AB1346 impacts YOU & YOUR BUSINESS!
