To all of our devoted customers who have been patiently awaiting an update, it is with a very heavy heart we inform you that the doors of Gene’s Books will not be reopening.

Gene’s was a quirky book lover’s haven—there has never been another store quite like it, nor will there ever be. However, the beautiful and strange magic of Gene’s extends far beyond the confines of any physical store. Above all, we are a community. We are people from all walks of life, with one common interest: BOOKS! No natural disaster can diminish our memories or rob us of our passion for the written word.

This is the update none of us wished for, but we downright refuse to let go of this amazing community of people. It may seem like Hurricane Ian wrote the last chapter for Gene’s Books, but really it’s just the beginning of something else. Instead of wallowing in our loss, we are choosing to remain hopeful about the future.

We encourage you all to share your favorite memories at Gene’s!

REMINDER: It has come to our attention that there are vendors out there who have been advertising apparel using our business logo. We would like to make it clear these are NOT authorized by us, and in purchasing them, you would not be supporting Genes books or its employees. If you see any of these pages please report them.

Not a day goes by when we don’t think about Gene’s Books. Our hurt is still so big, and as our staff struggles to move forward (whatever that might mean), we are left wondering if any job could ever match the magic that we made at Gene’s. Despite the different directions in which we are all being pulled, we still talk to each other every day.

I wish I had some news to share with you all, but the only thing I can tell you is KEEP READING. Nothing is more healing than holding a book in my hands and taking myself far away for a little while. Sometimes that’s all we need.

We are saddened to report that we have not yet been able to find a safe way inside the building. This cottage was a gem to our genre readers, and the not-knowing can hurt just as bad as the truth. You all have been so patient as we bring you these updates! Please hang on a little longer.

These pictures are devastating to share, but you all have a right to see what we have been grappling with for what has been, incredibly, almost a month now.

This is our mystery cottage. The first thing you see when you walk into Gene's Books. You can see the storm surge line, the mold growing on the ceiling. All of these books bloated with water, never to be cherished in the hands of a reader.

In short, we are heartbroken. We're hurting so bad. For the employees, this was our happy place. We were family. This was our home, and now we're lost. Ian came through and took away the thing we loved most.

As the person running this account, it's hard for me to find words to describe to you the pain that we feel--but, then again, I don't have to. I see it in your comments, and in all the lovely messages you send. You are hurting just as bad as we are, and all we can do is feel this hurt together, and hope to move forward into the future.

Thank you for everything. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

We might be known for our massive stacks of books, but this is taking it to a whole new level...

Pictured here is just a small quantity of the books at Gene's Too that suffered Ian's wrath. Our employees are devastated--we have shelved these books, ordered them, recommended them to customers. Now they have been reduced to nothing but soggy debris. To say that reading has been difficult these past few weeks is an understatement.

What are some of your favorite books that you've purchased from Gene's? Is there a perfect book that got you out of a reading slump? We'd love to see you share your thoughts and recommendations below.
