We had a little taste of spring in Maine today. It's a good time to order that anchor system for your Scott/Maine Freighter or your Old Town canoe. They'll go quickly as we approach ice-out!

In addition to logos, I can now also offer a laser-engraved ruler on my fish boards. I've been testing these in the field and I really like this option. When I started making boards, I was using aluminum rulers. They nearly doubled in price over the past 4 years and the numbers often chip or peel off over time. I recently switched to vinyl rulers from Oregon Rule Co. and they are great. No chipping or fading, although sometimes the epoxy covering will lift the ruler at the edges. However, with a laser-engraved ruler there is no risk of chipping or loosing the edge. The laser-engraved rulers are accurate, permanent, and easy to read. I think these rulers/boards will last longer than me 😃. This option is available at no extra charge.

I’ve been making fish boards for quite a few years. During that time, I’ve had a few requests for personalization or logos. I never really had the tools or skills to pull it off. But I recently added a laser to my workshop. I’m at the point where I feel I can offer these on all my orders, whether it's a fish board or canoe accessory. Below are a few examples. So, if you are interested in adding some bling to your order, just drop me an email at [email protected] and we’ll see what we can do.

A lot of owners want to put a trolling motor on the bow. It can be done and here are a couple options. The most important component is a trolling motor with a long shaft. Your 36" shaft from your Old Town Canoe isn't going to cut it. You need a 52" or better or you'll be banging on the side of your Scott Canoe/Maine Freighter. I recently modified one of my transom trolling motor mounts (shortened it and added a bolt hole) so it would mount on the bow and with my anchor arm. I also mocked up a prototype for a typical bow mount trolling motor (photos below). I used AdvanTech OSB to form two trapezoids that are clamped over the gunwales using 3/8 carriage bolts and k***s. I plan to coat this with West Systems Epoxy and then paint with a marine grade paint (Pettit). I've included the dimensions in one of the photos, if anyone is interested in building one.

This week, I'm going to address the two most asked questions I get about Scott canoes/ Maine Frieghters.

1. Can I put a trolling motor on the bow?

2. What's the best way to mount a transducer for my fish finder?
