Nila Collectibles

Nila Collectibles We sell a wide range of products, but our focus is used/rare books, and vinyl records. WHERE DID IT COME FROM?

In early 2016, we began clearing out our father's 1500 square foot warehouse that has been used to store a seemingly infinite number of items since 1970. Our family owned a military surplus store in the 1970s, and he purchased surplus in bulk at Department of Defense Auctions from local Military Bases (Alameda, Mare Island, and Hamilton). All inventories that weren’t sold when the store closed (ci

rca 1977) were stored in this warehouse. He had accumulated many tools such as wrenches - a large number of 1-1/4" and larger that were used for ship building, CASES of fasteners, screws, nuts, washers, etc., most are aviation and nautical, general military surplus including clothing, patches, flight suits, flight helmets, and thousands of miscellaneous items. The collection includes a very large number of naval block and tackle (wood frames with iron sheaves and hooks, painted battleship grey, with single, double and triple sheave sizes), some helicopter and airplane parts (mostly hydraulic actuators/servos, some clamps and small connectors), and other random items such as office supplies, medical devices, small boat props, glassware, dishware, and "DANGER MINES" signs from the early 1950s just to name a few. Most of the military surplus was made and manufactured in the 1950s and 1960s and much of it is still in the original packaging with dates and part numbers. Our father purchased most of these items by the pallet, so the volume is overwhelming. In fact, the warehouse was packed to the rafters with boxes when we started. He did not exclusively buy military surplus; he bought the inventory from many local business that were closing their doors, such as a lamp company, a record store, and a number of book stores. This huge warehouse has slowly been filled with other random items purchased over the years, so we have countless glass lamp shades, vintage metal (mainly brass) lamp parts, and boxes and boxes and BOXES of books and LPs which we had already been selling online since 2007. We have worked extremely hard to whittle down the inventory to a manageable amount, so we are now, finally, able to slowly start putting some items up for sale. We will describe the condition and provenance of these items to the best of our ability and include multiple photos with every listing. Please see each photo for closer details and overall condition of each of our items. PLEASE ask questions - we are happy to provide additional information/photos upon request. Any/all cleaning/restoration/repair (if necessary) is the responsibility of the buyer.

My brother suggested that I find and join a couple of letterpress groups on fb to help find people who may have information that can help us get through, identify, and sell all of the letterpress stuff we still have sitting in storage. This (below) is sort of how it started and the people in these groups have been AMAZING!!! From the first question to finishing up this set so it’s ready to sell it’s been a wild ride so far! And they are so NICE!! Which is unusual from my experience on fb. No one has trolled me, no one has made me feel like a loser for asking questions. I am clearly out of my element, and everyone has been very kind and welcoming. It’s been such a relief to meet people who aren’t cruel in this crazy land of Facebook.

This is how it began: Hello! I don't know where to begin but here goes. We are trying to identify this font. This is from a printing press my dad purchased in the early 70s from Redwood High School in Marin County, California. We have been slowly sorting and organizing the hundreds of drawers and type, and have come across a couple we can NOT figure out. The name stamped on the front of the drawer just says 18 point Type Text. Can anyone help me identify this? I've lost two days to this font and these drawers usually take me a couple of hours.

As it turns out, it was a typo, literally, that lead us to: Typo Text 18 point, so I thanked the group today: I wanted to share the finished photos and say THANK YOU to everyone who helped me! I can not express how grateful I am for your willingness to provide information that let me correctly identify and block out this set! It measures 4 x 5" and weighs over 5lbs. It comes to 668 letters/numbers and symbols (I use an excel sheet to map out our sets so I've included a photo of that) and I add some quads to keep it as square as possible. The only thing that was not in the set was any dashes, but I think it's pretty solid either way! I know I'm not the letterpress expert or enthusiast that most of you are, and your kindness (and tolerance) has been very much appreciated. This has been a very long and hard process to untangle this press and the thousands of pounds of type, and finding this group has made me feel a little less lost. I have a document where I am keeping information listed as you guys give it to me, so hopefully by the time this is all said and done I may sound like I know what I'm talking about!!! I'm contemplating the 24 point Paragraph Script next, and will probably have more questions....

Bonus photo of the newly bathed and oiled furniture enjoying a sun bath until I can get to it later.

Furniture: blocks of metal in various sizes that help hold the type together. I shared a mess of rusted furniture I’m cleaning and was given a LOT of really good information on rust removal!!

Well after a two day soak they are no longer rust color!! Scrubbed up and going back in for a second bath before oiling and drying. And I found this weird little thing I’ll have to research eventually. This will be the fourth and hopefully almost final batch of furniture to clean up. One more small load and fingers crossed we don’t find more!! Now I have to find a way to clean the galley (?) tray so I can use it. It’s longer but shorter than the brass one I use so it may actually be easier to work with. I was pretty amazed at what floated up through the foam, but I guess that’s what 50 years of neglect will do to metal… the letterpress adventures continue!!!

So this is 576 pieces of Kennerley Bold 14 point foundry type (plus quads). It takes about 45 minutes to put together and is smaller than a 3x5 card. I finally figured out how to do two at once, but you have to do them backwards, and the letters are reversed. I put in a couple photos that I flipped showing how they SHOULD look when used to print something. But that’s just for example, I have to do them mirror of each other and one is upside down too. These are driving me crazy. This sells for about $55 but we have smaller and bigger sets. I’m sort of putting them together however they fit on a card, I’m generally doing two or four of each set. I alternate how many letters depending on how many I have more of. I’m hoping to switch to a different font soon. A bigger font!!! 🙃 All sets are listed in our eBay store!!!

So far we have 8 sets of letterpress type listed in our eBay and Etsy stores, one sold last night! I am making two of each set, the number of specific letters and figures will differ between the sets. It takes F O R E V E R to put together a set, 45 minutes to an hour, and one set is approximately the size of a 3x5 card. We have the empty letter drawers listed separately as pick up only - they are way to big to ship economically. Happy Sunday everyone!

In the early 70s, our dad bought the printing press (including all the cabinets, drawers, type and more) from Redwood High School. It’s been sitting in storage 50+ years and my brother and I are FINALLY working on getting it organized and sold. There are many different fonts, but Kennerley Bold is one of the main ones that we have the most of. We sold 4 empty drawers in one day, those go the fastest. If I take the time to put together a “set” of the letters (650-775 letters), we can sell them for $40 and up (some fonts are really rare and expensive). Some drawers of various fonts (they have their own sorting key) we have sold full as-is. The type isn’t always necessarily in the right compartment so with the help of child labor (my daughter and her boyfriend), we have sorted and emptied maybe 10 drawers of Kennerley into small containers. It takes about 45 minutes to put together a set so it’s taking me a long time. My dining room has been overrun for weeks but we are finally making progress!!!
