✨ Student Spotlight: Miles Harris ✨

“Winning the Marin Music Chest scholarship on clarinet was incredibly gratifying—I put in so much time preparing, and it all paid off.” And winning Battle of the Bands? “That was a lot of fun. The crowd was big, and playing outside is always fun because you can really crank it.”

For Miles Harris, these moments aren’t just achievements—they’re payoff for years of dedication, curiosity, and a true love of music.

What began as a simple goal to join his friends in a band turned into something much bigger. In just a few years, Miles has grown into a dynamic, multi-genre musician—equally at home on clarinet and guitar.

His recent accomplishments:
🏆 2026 Marin Music Chest Scholarship Winner for Clarinet
🎸 Guitarist for MSA band, Captain Canary, winners of the San Anselmo 2026 Teen Battle of the Bands

At The Magic Flute, Miles has been guided by two incredible instructors–“Steve Bergman taught me everything that I know about playing the Clarinet. And Paul Geller has taught me many valuable music ideas that I could not have learned on my own”, says Miles

Through private lessons and ensemble experience, he’s developed his skills and more—musical voice, confidence, and connection.

“Playing music with others is like having a conversation,” he says. “It’s endlessly gratifying and fun, and allows you to pick up new ideas.”

That combination—strong fundamentals, inspiring teachers, and performance opportunities is what helps students grow into musicians like Miles.

And his advice for those just starting out?
“Practice a little bit every day. Just 15 minutes every day does a lot when you’re starting out. Also, have fun with it - learn songs that you like, don’t just do exercises.”

🎶 Happy Father’s Day to a brand new father at The Magic Flute!

This year, we’re celebrating Magic Flute teacher Tom Conneely—who just became a dad to _Thomas Francis Conneely IX (yes… ninth in a row!). 🤩

Tom brings the same energy to fatherhood that he brings to his teaching: passion, joy, and a deep love of music. A touring and gigging musician, Tom helps students of all ages build real-world skills—from technique and theory to improvisation and playing live with confidence.

When asked about becoming a dad, Tom kept it real:
“Fun, p**p, sleepless.”
And his favorite moment so far? “A smiling baby babble conversation that melted my heart.”

Becoming a father has only deepened what he already believes:
Music is a core human language—and a powerful, healing force.

We have no doubt baby Thomas will grow up surrounded by great music… starting with _“Muskrat Love”_ (Captain & Tennille version, of course 😉).

Give your young musician the experience of playing in a real ensemble—learning how to listen, blend, and grow as part of a group. In this guided program, students go beyond solo playing to develop the skills that make great ensemble musicians.

✔️ Strengthen sight-reading, tone, and musicality
✔️ Learn to blend, balance, and play in harmony with others

✔️ Explore styles like classical, jazz, Latin, pop & global music
✔️ Build confidence, timing, and teamwork
✔️ Perform live on stage at The HopMonk Tavern in Novato

Led by instructor Katie Fritts, this ensemble is designed for ages 10–15 with at least 1 year of playing experience. Open to flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, tuba, oboe, and bassoon.

�Whether you’ve been playing for decades or just picked it back up, Open Mic Night at The Magic Flute is a wonderful place to share your voice, your songs, and your stories.

From children to seniors — our stage is open to everyone. Bring a favorite tune, an original song, or just come to enjoy the music and community.
