It’s been a while since I threw my hat into the competitive mixology game, but the Sustainability Challenge was too good to pass up.

My cocktail, Rebel Rebel, by my commitment to sustainability in our industry, especially the human aspect or sustainability.

Dedicated to the immigrant workers of Southern California, the lifeblood of our hospitality and farming industry, the recipe evokes strong memories of my childhood enjoying a Vasos de Fruta pulled from a cooler at the side of a field. My mother would give my sisters and I each a couple of dollars and we would enjoy fresh fruit, hands sticky and faces warm from the sun.

That this opportunity comes this week, amid the amazing protests in Los Angeles, is not lost on me. We must remember the humanity of every man, woman, and child within our borders. No one is illegal on stolen land.

My fun take on the classic Ranch Water using for 🥕 🌱 ✨

Pretty Things 😎

2oz Blanco
1.5 oz smoked carrot and lemon juice*
Top ginger beer
Fresh dill

* for juice: 2 parts carrot juice, 1 part lemon juice, smoke in bottle and shake to incorporate

Garnish with fresh dill and edible blooms

Serve in a vintage glass that makes you happy 🤩

Yesterday we said goodbye to our big beautiful ginger monster Keats. After a tough battle, he died at home with Matthew, Ernie and me.

Through the last 14 years, Keats has seen me through some of the most challenging days I’ve experienced, and I’ll be forever grateful to him.

He was larger than life (literally), obsessed with thin mint Girl Scout cookies, loved balloons, was able to shed on clothing from two rooms away, and was always able to find his angle for a great photo. He was a great little brother to Oscar, and a big brother to Ernie.

Truly, anything I could say here pales next to the love I feel for this feisty ball of chaos. I’ll miss you buddy. Always. ♥️ 😼✨

So…..

I was honestly more anxiety ridden than I have been for many years to step behind the bar again tonight. I spent most of yesterday either ugly crying or angry and unbelieving.

If you know me, you know that I’m usually always the one to immediately start with the positivity posts. In spite of everything, there was a lot to celebrate: our first trans member of congress, two black women serving in the senate…good things.

However, I found myself very anxious to head to work tonight. I don’t want to talk about what I’m feeling. About what’s happening. But I found I did want to connect with people, and serve them drinks. It’s what I’m good at, and what makes me feel like I’m contributing something. We all like to do what we’re good at. I’m good at creating an experience for my guests. Whatever is happening, I can provide amazing cocktails and stellar pizzas and dishes. And I work for folks who I know support me, and all the people I care about. And that matters. So much.

So, I went to work tonight. And it wasn’t as bad as I feared. In fact, it was a good night. Busy. Hard work. Which helped me.

(Breathe) I’m ready to do it again tomorrow. And work for a better future for everyone. ♥️🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️👯‍♀️

If you know me, you know I’ll yell and scream at anyone who claims their vote doesn’t matter.

I don’t care if you’re in California, or Georgia, or Arizona, or Texas. YOUR. VOTE. MATTERS.

Whether it’s the most crucial presidential election of our lives, or down ballot elections that shape the future of your town / county / state, your vote is your voice. And as my dad always said - “ If you don’t vote, you don’t get to complain later.” We still have the privilege to vote in our country. And with that privilege comes the responsibility to do so.

I’m voting for and . Because I believe in human rights above all, and I will fight with everything I have to protect my right to control my body and my health, along with the rights of myself and all my q***r family and friends to live openly without fear. I’d also like to have healthcare and housing as basic human rights, but…..small steps

Regardless of your politics, I hope you vote. Because democracy only works if we all participate. 🗳️ 💕
