It is very meaningful personally to be offering card readings in Kerouac alley tomorrow (swipe for details)!When I first flew to San Francisco for a visit on my own at the age of 18, I found myself that first evening at the historic City Lights Bookstore where I met Lawrence Ferlinghetti. I just happened to be buying a poetry book of his when he was right there at the entry counter! I couldn’t believe that within hours of reaching this dream city I had already met the Beat generation legend.
True to a sort of Beatnik spirit, I gave the signed book away to a random young man I met at a party in college. I told him the whole story and then said, “Here - keep it!” It was an act of generous spontaneity I sometimes regret, but the look of unbelieving surprise on that boy’s face made it all worthwhile.
Luckily, I do have this photograph to remember that night in 2002. I was 18 years old and it was just 6 months after my father had died.
