It is very meaningful personally to be offering card readings in Kerouac alley tomorrow (swipe for details)!When I first flew to San Francisco for a visit on my own at the age of 18, I found myself that first evening at the historic City Lights Bookstore where I met Lawrence Ferlinghetti. I just happened to be buying a poetry book of his when he was right there at the entry counter! I couldn’t believe that within hours of reaching this dream city I had already met the Beat generation legend.

True to a sort of Beatnik spirit, I gave the signed book away to a random young man I met at a party in college. I told him the whole story and then said, “Here - keep it!” It was an act of generous spontaneity I sometimes regret, but the look of unbelieving surprise on that boy’s face made it all worthwhile.

Luckily, I do have this photograph to remember that night in 2002. I was 18 years old and it was just 6 months after my father had died.

I’m headed back down to my hometown for Spring Break! I’m a featured artist-in-residence at High Desert Test Sites, a “platform for art and experiences that enable us to step outside everyday life and envision new possibilities. The organization is based at A-Z West—Andrea Zittel’s 80-acre compound and artwork—where it brings together artists, writers, and thinkers to create projects that engage the desert and its communities.”

I’ll be offering readings on April 19th during the Joshua Tree farmer’s market, exact location TBD, but either at Joshua Tree Candle Company/Joshua Tree National Park Visitor Center OR the Grateful Desert Apothecary.
