Magikarp and Gyarados were the first Shining Pokémon featured in the TCG, possibly chosen because of their appearances in early seasons of Pokémon the Series and Pokémon Gold and Silver.
A larger variety of Shining Pokémon appeared in the Neo Destiny expansion, with one for every type other than the previously-released Water. These cards' artwork features a reflective foil treatment on the Pokémon itself, making the Pokémon literally "shine". Shining Pokémon in Neo Destiny have a unique rarity symbol, Shining Holo, based on the symbol used for Shiny Pokémon in the games.
In Japan, Shining Mew was released as an exclusive promotional card in CoroCoro Comic. It is a holofoil with an additional glitter coating.
