Abstract coiled ceramic sculpture with fluid lines, generous negative space, and a vertical, hive-like architecture that reflects Herman’s fascination with organic growth. Tubes and openings cluster, separate, and reconnect, suggesting a living system in continuous exchange with its surrounding with nothing fully separate, every form touching another. Created from an intentionally authentic place, the work invites viewers to feel their own inner alignment in quiet dialogue with the piece. Flow was made alongside nine students during Coiled Sculptures and the Principle of Organicity, a ceramic sculpture course Herman teaches at Tao of Clay.

Everything Touches exhibit: a meaningful collective experience inside The Granger. To touch is to connect, to alter, to be altered. In this layered, breathing environment, everything touches. Works are brought together exploring the porous boundary between the organic and the constructed, the private and the public.

Over 20 years of glaze development and experimentation and the temperamental nature of volcanic is still temperamental, even after all these years. The approach to the glaze on this piece is more painterly and the blending of the glazes has me intrigued. Still having fun doing clay!

This sculpture, now sadly lost due to an accident in the studio, held a deep connection for me. It embodied many of the principles I’ve always strived to reflect in my work: balance, strength, sensuality, and a dynamic sense of volume. The pass-through hole was part of a creative exploration I was deeply immersed in at the time—a motif I returned to again and again.

I’ve always faced resistance when it comes to making new sculptures. The organic, open-ended nature of the process stirs up a certain anxiety—an unease with not knowing where the work will lead. The hardest part is simply starting.

Lately, with so much of my focus on Tao of Clay, I haven’t made a successful sculpture in some time, and there’s a quiet voice that questions: Can I still do it?

Eric Landon’s approach to throwing is in alignment with the principles of what I am putting my attention on and trying to convey at Tao of Clay. Watching throw and teach deepened my understanding of his throwing philosophy; the clay and the body are as one. It was great to have some time together again to connect after a couple of years. Thanks for everything Eric.
