The term “cool customer” is the cliche of cliches, but for us, a cool customer absolutely makes your day, and Andy Zax is the coolest. When Andy comes to the shop, you get the opportunity to get a window into the marvelous intelligence swimming inside his brain. .zax is selecting at .hifi this Sunday from 8pm til 12, and we are ridiculously excited. I feel the same way about who’s spinning this Tuesday at the same time.
I’m eternally grateful to the ‘record gods’ that Andy Zax has been writing a book, and I can’t wait to read it. Excerpts from this as-yet-unpublished book, Extinctophonics, were recently featured in the fall issue of Maggot Brain magazine (pictured here). His writing style mixes sincerity, honesty, eloquence, beauty & clever comedy perfectly. And his observations invariably hit the bullseye.
Andy’s knowledge of the crevices & deep sea of recorded music & sound is unparalleled. He has fully earned the right to share whatever the hell he wants during his night at PTL, and that’s exactly what we want him to do. He’s one of our favorite record explorers, and his resume speaks for itself. As a reissue & compilation producer, Zax’s work has been wildly impressive. I fully welcome any criticisms Andy might make about my writing of him here, as he is a masterful critic. He is a brilliant writer, record producer, de facto music historian, information dispensary, closet comedian, music trivia wizard, the king/jester/priest of the land of record geekdom & one of the most influential advocates for preservation in the music industry. I’m sure I’m leaving plenty of things out here. He also has amazing hair (someone needs to be say it).
We anticipate a highly unique evening featuring a potpourri of Zax-ian esoteria, in his own words: “avant-miscellaneousness, retrodelic bafflement, midcentury modernism, corporate effluvia, dead people explaining things”
Also, that Holiday Inn: Central Reservations Systems- Operators Training Guide album. Swoon!!
