We've been working on a very important project related to the Lou Curtiss Sound Library. The project needs to find a hard print of this iconic photo. We are also hoping to discover who took this photo. If anyone can provide a print, help or information, please contact Brendan Boyle at (619) 301-7897. This is time sensitive. The sooner we can find a print, the better. Thanks!

We’ve got some fun shows at Folk Arts lined up for the month of March. The first of which will feature my neighbor Daniel, who goes by The Mario Test. I’ve been hearing Daniel’s beautiful Ambient music wafting in the air for a year or so. One day I was lucky enough to escape the daily hustle bustle and find the source of this beautiful music, and there was Daniel in his garage, creating these gorgeous sounds.

Next Saturday. March 2nd. 6pm. Free show! Gonna be a great one!

One of my favorite humans on this planet is Russ Hamm. Too much to say, but Russ played a huge role in digitizing and preserving the Lou Curtiss Sound Library and has been a brilliant custodian of it ’til this day.

It’s going to be too much fun for Russ to informally do his guitar soli thing tomorrow (Sunday 01/28) here at Folk Arts at 3pm. For me, there’s so much sentimental anticipation, as Russ is the coolest human ever.

The beauty of this thing is that Russ doesn’t want this to be a performance (Yes!!). He just wants to play the guitar, which sounds very very alright to us.

3pm tomorrow this Sunday. The amazing Russ Hamm playing his guitar at Folk Arts, a place he has given so many countless hours to. This is as alright as it gets.

This vintage photo features Russ in the the center playing the fiddle (you can see his face) at an informal jam session during the 10th annual San Diego Folk Festival on the SDSU campus. Photo by the wildly talented Virginia Curtiss, another favorite human & exceptional photographer.

Can’t thank our neighbors enough for this print. This is extra sentimental, as Virginia would go to George’s for supplies etc back in the day. If you’re curious about exploring the wide, wonderful world of photography, .camera has got you. What an impressive, beautiful, institutional space it is. So very grateful for their presence in SD!!

And this Sunday at 3pm Russ Hamm (pictured here) will be exploring the concept of non-performance performance, a concept we’ve been embracing for some time now. We absolutely love it.

Also, on Sunday we’ll be having friends DJing here all day until 3. At 3pm longtime friend of Folk Arts, Russ Hamm, will be gracing us with an informal solo guitar performance.

Hosting Mary Lattimore here at Folk Arts is a dream come true. We are very prepared for whatever beautiful experiences might occur. Thanks to for being the coolest and to the Folk Arts team for being thee coolest.

We’re hoping for this to be a 360 degree sound & sight experience, so that folks can spread out in order to make room for others. The forecast does call for rain this weekend and we’re prepared. You might just want to bring your jacket & umbrella.

Our set-up is all about accommodating as many people as comfortably & safely as possible. We’ll have 80+ chairs and lots of standing room beyond that. If it’s raining bring your jackets & umbrellas and we’ll strive to adapt to accommodate to coat hanging needs as best we can. We’ll work on this today & coats shall be racked. Your patient parking & chill walks are so very appreciated.

Arriving early, parking far away & taking a fun walk is the way to go here. Our joke is that this is the one artist ambient woodstock, so rain might be appropriate.

We’ve already been planning to set aside an outdoor standing section, with great sight lines & sound of the show, if it’s not raining (fingers crossed) or if it is. And let’s be honest, hearing Mary’s music to the Rhythm of the Rain sounds pretty interesting & nice, so either scenario sounds chill to us.

Supremely happy to drop that reference to SD’s own The Cascades with their hit “Rhythm of the Rain”. If my memory serves me well, Lou Curtiss drummed for them at the Mississippi Ballroom at the in the late 1950’s.

Very excited for the unveiling of where our friends will be playing tonight, in the historic Mississippi Ballroom space, beautifully redesigned with clam intact by our friends … Sold out show, obviously. Sending a huge congrats to all parties. After party at PTL!

Brave the rain or the clouds or the sunshine on Sunday evening. It will be special regardless. And as always, be cool, be chill & be respectful. Thank you!!

And Mary will be bringing the after party tomorrow at .hifi . Time will be Mary’s time💜

We are beyond thrilled to be hosting modern harpist Mary Lattimore here at Folk Arts!!

Sunday, January 21st 6:00-8:00p.m.
3610 University Ave., San Diego, CA 92104
Many chairs will be provided if you desire to sit down. We recommend arriving early.

We’re planning on providing some killer sound for this one. We’re going all in with lots of love for Mary’s music.

has been making some serious waves in the music world, which is no surprise at all once you see her perform or listen to her blissful albums. She currently has a residency at Zebulon in L.A. and recently did a brilliant collaboration with comedian Joe Pera. The Folk Arts team really loves her latest album, Goodbye, Hotel Arkada. Mary is a bit of a DIY music legend, and it is an absolute honor to be hosting her at Folk Arts.

Additional info can be found on our website (link in bio).

Our fun joke about this very chill & wonderful show: Doors 10am (we’ll be open all day), Show sometime around 6pm (likely after; whenever Mary wants really).

We’ll be hosting an informal after party at Part Time Lover Hi-Fi (21+), where Mary will be sharing music she is passionate about. The start time & end time will be whatever Mary wants. Her choice.

The term “cool customer” is the cliche of cliches, but for us, a cool customer absolutely makes your day, and Andy Zax is the coolest. When Andy comes to the shop, you get the opportunity to get a window into the marvelous intelligence swimming inside his brain. .zax is selecting at .hifi this Sunday from 8pm til 12, and we are ridiculously excited. I feel the same way about who’s spinning this Tuesday at the same time.

I’m eternally grateful to the ‘record gods’ that Andy Zax has been writing a book, and I can’t wait to read it. Excerpts from this as-yet-unpublished book, Extinctophonics, were recently featured in the fall issue of Maggot Brain magazine (pictured here). His writing style mixes sincerity, honesty, eloquence, beauty & clever comedy perfectly. And his observations invariably hit the bullseye.

Andy’s knowledge of the crevices & deep sea of recorded music & sound is unparalleled. He has fully earned the right to share whatever the hell he wants during his night at PTL, and that’s exactly what we want him to do. He’s one of our favorite record explorers, and his resume speaks for itself. As a reissue & compilation producer, Zax’s work has been wildly impressive. I fully welcome any criticisms Andy might make about my writing of him here, as he is a masterful critic. He is a brilliant writer, record producer, de facto music historian, information dispensary, closet comedian, music trivia wizard, the king/jester/priest of the land of record geekdom & one of the most influential advocates for preservation in the music industry. I’m sure I’m leaving plenty of things out here. He also has amazing hair (someone needs to be say it).

We anticipate a highly unique evening featuring a potpourri of Zax-ian esoteria, in his own words: “avant-miscellaneousness, retrodelic bafflement, midcentury modernism, corporate effluvia, dead people explaining things”

Also, that Holiday Inn: Central Reservations Systems- Operators Training Guide album. Swoon!!

The holiday season at Folk Arts is going to be somethin’ else. All weekend long (this Fri, Sat & Sun) we’ll be having a customer appreciation sale at our main shop: 20% off all of the 45s & 8-tracks in this large, whimsical space. There’s a lot of them, and we want you to have some fun :)

We’ll only have a very small amount of RSD BF exclusives (don’t line up), but our shops will have a wild inundation of fresh records and will see waves of transformations throughout the rest of the year. You will be seeing many rare LPs you’ve never seen before. Additionally, we’ll be showcasing oodles & oodles of uncanny cassettes, all the hottest hits, displayed in a visual splendor unlike anything you have ever dreamt. Hottest Hits
