Your garden does not produce magic on its own. Pollinators are doing most of the heavy lifting. 🐝

August is one of the harder months for them. The heat is up, blooms are thinning out, and they need a little more support than usual. Here is how to help:

Keep compost in the ground. That moisture creates cool microclimates under plant canopies where pollinators can take shelter from the heat

Plant late season bloomers. Matilija poppies, monkeyflowers, and lilacs are exactly what pollinators need right now

Keep your plants watered and fed. A healthy, hydrated plant has the energy for that last push of late summer flowering 🌸

Get to know your pollinators. Sit outside three times a day, early morning, midday, and just before sunset, and observe what is actually visiting your yard

Once you know who is showing up you can plant specifically for them. A rose might look pollinator friendly but it is not always the best choice for what we have here in San Diego.

Drop a comment and tell us what pollinators you are seeing in your garden right now! 🌿

Why fight August garden pests with harsh chemicals when nature has better solutions? πŸ›

Meet your tiny allies: beneficial nematodes and mosquito bits! These biological warriors tackle grubs and fungus gnats without turning your soil into a chemical wasteland.

The natural pest control playbook:

Nematodes hunt down grub larvae (takes 4-6 weeks to work)
Mosquito bits eliminate fungus gnat cycles in your houseplants
Both work with soil biology, not against it

Patience pays off - we're breaking pest cycles, not just zapping what's visible today.

Escape the heat in our cool bonsai area while we chat pest solutions! Open Wed-Sun 9a-5p 🌿

Succulents Beyond the Basics
Sunday, August 16th at 9a

🌡 Whether you're thinking about cacti, aloe, or reviving succulents that are looking neglected, let's move beyond the basic pot-and-rock look. Succulents can do much more than sit in a decorative dish, and the right approach makes a big difference in how they grow.

πŸ’š Learn care basics, drainage tips, planting strategies, and how to encourage attractive, low-water landscapes that hold up in Southern California. This class is a good fit for anyone who wants better results and a cleaner, more intentional look.

🚜 Since 1972, we've focused on simple growing methods, time-tested advice, and locally-grown plants.

β˜€οΈ We'd love to invite you down to our open-air canyon classroom for a fun morning of casual learning.

🧴 During warmer months, hats, sunscreen, water recommended.

πŸ¦† Free to attend, no RSVP required.

πŸš™ We kindly ask that if you take advantage of a free class, and if mobility allows, that you consider finding street parking on Altadena Ave and walk over, keeping our parking lot open.

πŸ›»You can pop by our "Loading Zone" afterwards for easy parking-free loading!

Small farmers rarely get the priority. Foodshed decided to change that. 🌱

Ricardo broke down how their cooperative model actually works, and it is worth understanding.

Foodshed works with around 60 local farms, 30 of them in their cropland program, and when orders come in the small farmers get first priority.

Medium farms fill in the gaps if needed, not the other way around.

Here is what makes it even better:

Every farmer works on contract. If Foodshed commits to 300 carrots, that farmer gets paid for 300 carrots, period. A sure thing for small farmers, definitely hit us right in the heart.

The cooperative handles the selling. The farmer plants with confidence knowing the money is already secured

Less waste across the board. Every seed that goes in the ground has a guaranteed home 🀎

That is a model worth supporting. 🌿

Foodshed offers in-person market days Saturday 9a-1p and Tuesdays 3p-6:30p. You can also participate in their CSA, which starts at just $20 and has pickup options all around the county!

Have you ever ordered from a local farm cooperative or CSA? Tell us in the comments!

What if one plant could supply your kitchen with fresh herbs for years and still have enough left over to give away? 🌿

That is exactly what oregano, mint, and thyme do. These creeping herbs are the opposite of those sad $4 grocery store packets that wilt before you even use them.

One gallon container, basic potting soil, a little patience, and you are set.

Here is the best part:

They never really stop growing. Season after season, no dormancy, no replanting

When they outgrow the pot, divide them. Cut into thirds, keep one, give two away with roots intact, and watch all three take off again

Low maintenance, high reward. These are genuinely the gift that keeps giving β˜€οΈ

One plant turns into a kitchen staple that also makes the best neighbor gift you have ever shown up with.

Stop buying those $4 herb packets at the grocery store. There is a much better way. 🌿

Oregano, mint, and thyme are the herbs that keep on giving. One plant in a one gallon pot with basic potting soil is all it takes to get started. From there they just grow, and grow, and grow.

Here is what makes these different from the annuals:

They come back season after season. No replanting, no starting over, no dormancy

One plant becomes three. When it outgrows the pot, divide it into thirds and give two thirds away, roots and all, and replant the rest

They basically take care of themselves. Same potting soil you use for houseplants works just fine β˜€οΈ

Fresh herbs on your counter year round without the grocery store markup. That is a win.
