As we close the store tonight we want to make sure Books After Dark attendees know, if you don't already, that we will be promoting ban worthy concepts and ideas like mutual aid and unionization during the book fair!

SunTrapp Workers Unite will be doing a half hour moderated Q & A with Tara Lipsyncki to start off our evening at 6:30PM. Banned books get the axe for a multitude of reasons. Oftentimes because they have alternative, but empowering ideas others find controversial. Unionization being one of them! We are proud to host some of the unionized bar staff of The SunTrapp to discuss their experience making history in becoming part of the first unionized bar in Utah.

The SunTrapp in Salt Lake City became Utah's first unionized bar in November 2025 after management voluntarily recognized the staff, represented by CWA Local 7765. The unionization efforts followed a strike over unfair labor practices and aimed to secure better wages and safer working conditions, resulting in a reopened, unionized establishment.

CAN YOU BELIEVE BOOKS AFTER DARK IS TOMORROW!?!?!

Last, but certainly not least of our returning banned book panelists is Rebekah Cummings!

Her library advocacy has been recognized by the American Library Association, Utah Library Association, the League of Women Voters, ACLU of Utah, and the Utah Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters. In 2024, Rebekah Cummings was the first librarian to run for the office of Lt. Governor on a major party ticket in the United States.

They say every time you read a great book, your brain gains more wrinkles. Naturally, here at Weller's, we're aiming for maximum brain wrinkles.
If you're tired of the "smooth-brained" logic of banning books without actually reading them, we've got the ultimate antidote. We are incredibly proud to introduce a panel of people with big, beautiful, highly decorated brains. They love protecting literary freedom and helping celebrate banned books.
Thomas Ford/Tom (he/him) is a Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Utah, where his practice focuses on complex civil rights and liberties litigation in federal and state court, with an emphasis on First Amendment, Eighth Amendment, immigrant rights, and disability rights cases.
Prior to joining the ACLU, Tom served as an Assistant Public Defender at the Alaska Public Defender Agency, where he developed substantial trial experience advocating for the rights and dignity of indigent clients throughout Alaska. He earned his J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he represented incarcerated people with disabilities in class action litigation through the Civil Rights Clinic and was awarded the Arnold & Porter Civil Rights Endowed Scholarship for his demonstrated commitment to civil rights, public service, and academic excellence.
Tom is a member of the Utah State Bar Leadership Academy, Class of 2026, and is admitted to practice in Utah and Alaska, in the federal district courts, and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
The ACLU of Utah operates through public education, legal action, and legislative and community advocacy to enhance and defend the civil rights and freedoms of everyone living in or visiting Utah. They are an inclusive, nonpartisan, statewide organization powered by members, donors, and volunteers.

They are overjoyed to be working with Weller Book Works as a previous English Major and current radical educator specializing in their own programs and being a full-time self employed artist here in the valley of Sin and Salt.
