Story time with Flourish…

One of my favorite things to hear is when people come up to me and say, “I didn’t burn candles for years because of headaches and now because of Flourish I can burn candles again!”

It’s my favorite because that was my story.

When I was younger, whenever it was time to clean my mom would let me light all the candles and it was my favorite thing. As I got older I slowly quit burning them because of headaches and eventually went for many years never burning any.

I missed them. Especially whenever I was cleaning.

5 years ago we were living in an RV, I had no car to go anywhere so it seemed like the perfect time to learn something new. Just for myself. A little hobby.

But alas, I’m not very good at keeping good things to myself and quickly realized everyone I know probably wants to burn non-toxic candles too.

So I started the Flourish insta and set a date for when they would launch online.
That insta account only have a small handful of followers so my expectations were low.

Launch day came and within 2 hours I had sold out and my insta page had gained over 100 new followers. A hundred new followers felt like a multitude and I wanted to run away. 🫣

I didn’t run away, I bravely restocked and kept going and I’m ever so glad I did because not I get to hear peoples’ stories of being able to burn candles once again and o longer having headaches.

I’d say doing scary things usually ends up being worth it, at least in this case it did.

To fully be able to appreciate a non-toxic candle I think it’s important to understand what the alternative is. Candles as we knew them for years were toxic. Typically candles were/are made of paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product, which creates benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). The toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes.
Look for candles that are made with cleaner wax alternatives like soy or beeswax. Avoid candles that say soy blend because it’s most likely a soy/paraffin blend.

Candles also were/are typically scented with harmful fragrance oils. Those fragrance oils are linked to a staggering number of health risks. And are classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins, and carcinogens.
Historically, the fragrance industry has largely been unregulated and has never been transparent about safety.

Thankfully with the rise of more awareness surrounding the topic of toxins, a few companies have risen to the challenge of changing the standards and creating clean fragrance oils that have gone through rigorous testing and are held to the highest standards in both performance and toxicity.
Look for candles that are labeled as non-toxic.

Curing is an important part of candle making as it allows the fragrance oil to “spread out” into the wax evenly and provide the best scent throw possible.
We’ve poured all of the scents in glass vessels and they are currently in the curing phase.
