“The Tonto—between South Kaibab and Hermit—is a “trail” in the official sense. Maintained, even cruisey in spots. But it makes you earn everything. Exposed, unforgiving, honest miles. You get shade if the canyon wall feels generous, or a cloud drifts by, or you drop into what I started calling the heart of each canyon.

That’s where it changes.

You step into these deep-cut corridors—old tributaries that began the whole slow carving of the canyon. The rock opens up its memory there—layer after layer, time stacked like it forgot to stop. It’s quieter, heavier.

You’re not above the canyon anymore, you’re inside it, walking through the beginning of things.

Then it throws you back out into the sun onto the canyon shelf, nearest the Colorado.

Boulders all day. Ankle rolling rocks for trail. Some route finding, mostly just navigating rockfall like a tired lizard. Ninja hiking, but less graceful.

Took too many photos until I remembered I had miles to make—needed to get within range of the Colorado.

So I put on my “Hayduke hat”. Head down. Just walk.“
