The bait shop took a beating in Hurricane Helene and remains closed until the city decides to either tear down or rebuild the building. However the dock/pier made it through the storm with minimal damage. The Shell Key Shuttle and Offshore Hustler fishing charters are both back up and running trips daily. Call them for more information.

This time of year we start to see "Sea Hares or Sea Slugs" swimming along our beaches. We commonly have "Mottled Sea Hares" every year. We called them "Ink Fish" as a kid growing up around here. But this one seems to be an "Atlantic Black Sea Hare". I've never seen one before. Our "Mottled Sea Hares" are usually only around 6-8 inches long and this one was well over 15+ inches.

With Spring approaching the Fishing is starting to pick up. The water temperatures are around 69-70 degrees. The Pier's pilings are currently "covered" in Sheepshead. There have been a few small Snook under the pier and a couple Pompano & Mackerel caught off the end of the dock. Also some schools of Mullet have been passing through, But we haven't seen any schools of bait yet.

This morning there was a Momma & Baby Dolphin hunting fish around the pier. The Momma spent 10 minutes trying to get a Sheepshead out from the middle of a 3 piling cluster. The baby just swam around waiting for mom to catch breakfast. She never did get the fish out but did put on quite a show. 🙂

Things are getting back to normal. We are back to our regular hours of operation in the bait shop = Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 5:30 pm and Weekends 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. The Shell Key Shuttle is in her new slip and the other boats should be back soon.
