By Amanda Cross Amanda Cross is the pen name for Carolyn Gold Heilbun, who, according to wikipedia, was the first woman to receive tenure as an English professor at Columbia University. Heilbrun, known as a outspoken feminist author, accused the English department at Columbia for descriminating against women. Considering this history, I was surprised to feel that, although the women in the novel get all the best and most witty lines, the action and resolution was completely propelled by the male characters....

by Ann Braden Really a very interesting book that deals with several subjects that I think are underrepresented in children’s literature - Class, Male Manipulation, and Guns. Zoey’s family is right on the edge financially, recently homeless having lived in a car and now in the mother’s boyfriend’s neat and tidy trailer. The atmosphere in the trailer is tense, the kids have to walk on eggshells so as not to antagonize Lenny (the boyfriend) who might kick them back onto the streets. ...

A deeply meaningful book. Sometimes the most powerful experiences in books happen when you get to walk a mile in another person’s shoes. In this case, you get a first person narrative of an African American woman born into slavery, set “free” at the age of twelve, and the rest of her experiences for the next 98 years or so. Gaines’ ability to create such a textured and rich story is breathtaking, not only do we get a very realistic portrayal of the vast changes to the lives of Americans (both black and white) after the civil war, but the book is filled with small asides and details to give the story a very strong sense of realism (a fan left on a chair by a character that never actually appears in the book.) And, what could have been a book crowded with scenes of brutality, which, despite the historic proof of countless atrocities, might have appeared heavy handed, Miss Jane describes a life that is filled with horror, beauty, love, laughter, and triumph. This book should be required reading for everybody in the United States.

What Kind of Nation - Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall and the Epic Struggle to Create a United States by James F. Simon Again, an embarrassing admission here, my knowledge of American history is pretty ankle deep. But, I'm starting and that is something. The first book in the series (see my earlier blog post) was Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis. A great introductory book to the foundation of the United States. [ 301 more words ]

Founding Brothers By Joseph Ellis This is a perfectly enjoyable and absolutely startling book. Now if a novelist were to have created this story, the incidents surrounding the birth of the United States, they would have been lambasted by critics shouting, “sentimental and unbelievable! You expect me to believe that at every pivotal moment the right person appears to save the day! [ 121 more words ]

Here is a wonderful passage from Richard Rohr's Falling Upward: Any discovery or recovery of our divine union has been called "heaven" by most traditions. Its loss has been called "hell." The tragic result of our amnesia is that we cannot imagine that these terms are first of all referring to present experiences. When you do not know who you are, you push all enlightenment off into a possible future reward and punishment system, within which hardly anyone wins. Only the True Self knows that heaven is now and that its loss is hell - now. Richard Rohr Falling Upward

I do love Shaw: "... the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself to be a mighty one... the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining the the world will not devote itself to making you happy." George Bernard Shaw

An evening with the Poetry of Langston Hughes 10/28/2019 6 pm Fox Den Events Goodbye Christ by Langston Hughes is a powerful and angry poem and I think it really gets to the point. Instead of using the facile argument, used by oh so many, that everything to do with a religion (in this case Christianity, or how about Buddhist perpetrated genocide in Miyanmar?!) is corrupt due to the acts of some followers (Not really followers, fact - you abuse a child you are not a Christian or you kill or in anyway harm a person, or any living creature - you are not a Buddhist), Hughes makes the argument that a long history of brutality and corruption has finally out shadowed Jesus' message of love and forgiveness.
