Orchard Bees hard at work! 🍯

Honey flavors vary based on the floral sources from which bees collect nectar, leading to a spectrum of tastes from mild and floral to bold and molasses-like.
The apples blossoms have come and gone and wildflowers are starting to bloom!

I dress up for every inspection after receiving an aggressive colony a couple of years ago. But there is something special about observing honeybees unobstructed by netting... the way they smell, and sound. It's like an anti-anxiety pill for me...so when I have a calm and gentle hive, I'm putting my face up to those little ladies!
I tell them good job 👏

Grim projections for honeybee colonies this year. Several reports started that up to 60% of hives were lost in 2024 and reports now are talking 70% losses for 2025.

Washington State University entomologists announced this week that commercial honey bee colony losses are projected to reach between 60% and 70% in 2025.

Most store bought honey is sourced from many commercial keepers, mixed together, heated to preserve liquidity, and then ultrafiltered.
This can still be a delicious product, but this process removes the pollen and plant particles that can help us acclimate to the local flora. Heat destroys the enzymes that are beneficial to our microbiome.

Quite grateful for the support at yesterday's Orchard Stop and Shop in Litchfield. I love sharing about bees and honey and visiting with this community.
I'm currently 8 months pregnant, so I didn't sign up for many fall festivals or sales in the next couple months.
I will, however, be bringing some honey and baked goods to the Fall Festival in Rice next Sunday, October 6th, 10 to 4!

🍎 I've been pretty spoiled lately with lots of apples. My brother and sister-in-law bought an operating orchard south of us this spring and the apples have been coming in plentiful.
After making homemade apple butter, my husband sent me a recipe for apple cinnamon rolls. (Hungry hints)
Filled with honey apple butter and sautéed apples, I topped them with caramel sauce before deciding they also needed cream cheese frosting. ✨️😋
