Tired of Having a Rat Tan Every Summer - Here is the Solution
I know what your first question is... What is a Rat Tan? That is what my kids call the embossed rattan look on the back of their legs when they sit in a rattan chair in shorts or a bathing suit. It looks a bit like a railroad track that is running down the back of your legs and stops at your knees. The general consensus in my family is that it looks "stupid". They all put a lot of energy into not being the person who had to sit on the rattan chair. The winner gets to sit on a smooth bottom chair.
Rattan is a beautiful material and it always looks perfect in a backyard on chairs, sofas and even end tables. People started using rattan because it was an inexpensive weaved natural material that was naturally cool to sit on. It never was hot like a metal chair, so you didn't have to worry about burning your legs when the chair was in the sun. It also has small holes between the woven palm stems. This allowed air to cool your back or your seat.
