🎣 Weekend Fishing Report | St. Croix River Valley

Fishing has been steady, especially during the early morning and evening hours as the summer heat continues.

🎣 Walleye: Best bite has been on the St. Croix River in 18 to 20 feet of water. Live crawlers on spinners are producing fish, with leeches also working well on nearby lakes during low-light periods.

🐟 Bass: Largemouth and smallmouth are active around w**d edges, docks, and rocky shorelines. Soft plastics, jigs, and topwater baits are all producing fish, especially early and late in the day.

🐟 Panfish & Crappies: Bluegills and crappies continue to bite around w**d beds in 6 to 10 feet of water. Small jigs tipped with wax worms or live bait have been the most consistent.

🦈 Northern Pike: Look for pike along w**d lines and cabbage beds. Spinnerbaits, spoons, and larger swimbaits are getting attention.

If you’re heading out this weekend, focus on the first few hours after sunrise or the last couple of hours before sunset for your best chance at success.

🦌 Minnesota Antlerless Deer Tags Go on Sale Soon

If you’re planning to hunt deer in Minnesota this fall, now is the time to start planning.

Antlerless permits will be available soon, and if you’re hunting in a lottery permit area, don’t wait until the last minute. Buying your deer license before the lottery deadline is the only way to be entered for an antlerless permit in your chosen Deer Permit Area.

Before opening day, make sure you know:

🦌 Whether your area is Lottery, Managed, Intensive, or CWD

🦌 The bag limit for your area

🚨 Minnesota Deer Hunters: Big Changes for the 2026 Fi****ms Season

Beginning with the 2026 deer season, Minnesota’s statewide shotgun-only zone has been eliminated.

This means that legal centerfire rifles and shotguns may now be used throughout Minnesota for deer hunting unless the county you are hunting in has adopted a shotgun-only ordinance.

Counties that have adopted a shotgun-only ordinance (as of May 5, 2026):

• Brown
• Cottonwood
• Dodge
• Faribault
• Houston
• Jackson
• Kandiyohi
• Nobles
• Pope
• Rock
• Watonwan

Partial shotgun-only ordinances:

• Clay County (portion of the county)
• Wilkin County (portion of the county)

⚠️ This list could change. Counties are not required to notify the Minnesota DNR by a specific deadline, so additional counties may adopt ordinances before the season begins.

What hunters should know:

✔️ The changes take effect with the 2026 fi****ms deer season.
✔️ Check with the county where you plan to hunt before opening day.
✔️ The Minnesota DNR will continue updating its website and the 2026 Hunting Regulations as new information becomes available.

The Minnesota DNR has stated it did not initiate this legislation and does not have safety or wildlife management concerns with the elimination of the statewide shotgun zone. Regardless of the firearm used, safe hunting practices remain every hunter’s responsibility.
