Next up on the TBR pile: Whistler by Ann Patchett! I have read other books by Ann and really enjoy her writing style. This is a new release (June 2nd) and falls into the contemporary fiction space. It is a novel about how smallest decisions we make can have the largest impacts on shaping our lives. Here is a blurb from the cover:

Whistler is a story about two adults looking back over the choices they made, and the choices that were made for them. It’s a story about bravery, memory, the often small yet consequential moments that define our lives, and the endless stream of loss that in time comes for us all. Beautiful in its simplicity, it is ultimately about how love endures, and how the feeling of being known by one other person, even for a short period of time, can change everything.

Sometimes books like this can be quite introspective, I can't wait to dive in! Are you reading anything interesting? Let me know about it in the comments - I am always on the hunt for the next book!

Allison was in this weekend with some friends and managed to squeeze 20 books in our Books Revisited tote! In case you are wondering this is the new record, and yes, she did fill it over the sides but was still able to carry it by the handles so I think it should count! There were four hardcovers in the bottom of the bag too so there might be room for improvement. We still have totes available (less than $20 with tax!) and we offer 10% off when you bring them back and fill them up!

This picture gives me hope for our future (as readers). It really doesn't matter where I go, I always seem to find the books. I have seen this before, can you see it? Look at the little pile of junk food clinging to the bookshelf. In my mind someone is making good choices. Maybe they dropped their groceries and decided to take home a book instead. I love it when people choose books!

I found an old book last night while cleaning in the basement and this one has a secret. It looks like something straight out of a Harry Potter film, with leather clasps and binding and is dated 1873. I cannot read the text (I think its an old Swedish religious book), and when I flipped to the back I was surprised by the large section that had been hollowed out! It made me smile, as I thought about how books intertwine with our lives. How they inform and inspire, and entertain us with their stories revealing their secrets as we progress through the pages. But sometimes, they can also keep our own secrets, buried beneath the covers. It makes me wonder what could have ever been inside?

Check out this old map that came in last week. It is a pocket map of Minne sota, published by Kenyon Printing (Des Moines, IA) in 1901! When folded it measures 3" x 5 1/2" , and unfolded 10 1/2" x 14". It also includes population data on the reverse (St. Cloud - 8,663), and another fold out county map (Ottertail County) bound inside the front cover. I keep maps behind the desk, so ask about this one if you stop in and have an interest!

This time of year, reading outside is one of the best ways to lose yourself in a book. I found an ideal reading spot down by the river, this tree, the angle and roots form almost a perfect cradle. Access is easy, it's shaded, and the long views of the river are idyllic. I included directions to the reading tree in the comments - where is your summer place to get lost in a book?!
