Did you know baby pelicans are nesting just south of Island City Harbor? 🐦🤍

Many visitors ask, “Do you ever see baby pelicans?” The answer is yes!

Just a short distance south of the harbor, a nesting island becomes home each spring to hundreds of American White Pelicans. These remarkable birds gather in large colonies where they lay eggs, hatch their young, and raise their chicks together.

Baby pelicans hatch from eggs about the size of a goose egg and are born covered in soft down. As they grow, they form nursery groups called “pods,” where dozens of chicks stay together while the adults fish for food. Within a few months, these fluffy youngsters will grow into the massive, graceful birds we see soaring over Pool 13.

Seeing a pelican colony in action is one of the many unique wildlife experiences that makes our stretch of the Mississippi River so special.
