Finishing up with a couple of pieces for JW’s barbecue today. Jace came over and gave me a hand. He charred the 8’ board that will be a fold up bar on the trailer and he oiled this beautiful walnut cutting board. We also removed the clamps from the plug on the walnut slab. It’s looking really good. A little bit of clean up and then I’ll blend the color a bit more when the top is assembled.

Busy day today in the shop. I added the wheels and hardware to all the name trains that were ordered last weekend. These came out nice. Made from cherry and walnut and finished with an oil and beeswax mix. I’ll try to get them shipped tomorrow. I also got some work done on a couple of pieces for JW’s Barbecue. One will be a 40” long walnut cutting board, the other will be a fold up shelf that mounts on the side of their trailer. Then I spent some more time getting the plug fitted for the walnut slab. I have it all ready to install it’s going to fit perfectly. I pulled it back out and sealed the bottom of the hole on the slab and the back of the plug before I install it. This will help insure a good bond when I put it in.

Well it’s been a few weeks since these walnut slabs were milled. It looks like they have accumulated well after milling and are now ready to work with. The first step in building the table is to repair the damage that occurred during milling. A large knot was torn out. I’ll be fixing this by taking another knot from the same tree and cutting it to fit. I’m cleaning up the torn out knot today and should be ready to replace it tomorrow.

Looks like a train yard in the shop. I have one train left to cut. After that I’ll add the wheels and finish. I also Put the last coat of finish on this 48” round table. The honey colored stain and black base makes a great combination.

Almost complete! A couple more coats of finish tomorrow and it will be done.

It was great to get back in the shop today after a very successful event in Lake Lure. We took quite a few orders for name trains and a helicopter and a custom log hauler. I’ll be getting to work on those as well as the 8’ live edge table this week. Jace came over today and helped me with a few things. We got started on a planter box and I got all the parts cut for the base of the round table. I also got a couple of letters cut for the first name train. This one is made from cherry. Tomorrow I’ll wrap up the assembly of the table and get the top stained. I’ll also finish up the first name train. Then as soon as I paint the base for the table I’ll move the walnut slabs into the shop and get started. Also still to come, a fireplace surround, oven hood, entry door, and much more!
