One of my favorite fly-tying materials I’ve ever found is the Scud Back Material from - It’s perfect for creating realistic hard-shell thorax sections on nymphs, scuds, and crawfish patterns. Pair it with their resin and the finished flies look like straight-up candy in the vise.

One of my favorite patterns to fish with as the weather heats up and the bass are deeper here in Austin: The Squiggle Butt

These do particularly well at the Bat Bridge (Congress) on Lady Bird Lake.

You never know what will happen when you fish Lady Bird Lake in Austin. I’ve seen hundreds of folks jump off the bridge but this was the first time I’ve seen anyone use a ski rope.

A few months ago, my good friend David hooked me up with what might be a lifetime supply of beautiful pheasant tail feathers. Since then, I’ve been itching to finally dig into Yvon Chouinard’s “Pheasant Tail Simplicity” and it absolutely lives up to the hype.

It’s a fantastic read with clear, step-by-step instructions on some of the most effective pheasant tail patterns ever tied. My personal favorite so far: the Bead Head Flymph. Simple, buggy, and deadly. I have a feeling this thing is going to fool a lot of sunfish—and once the water warms up a bit, probably a few bass too.

Sometimes simple really is better. 🎣

Trying everything I can to get my 5- and 7-year-olds into fishing 🎣. Turns out my 5-year-old daughter is all about the fluffy stuff.

Arctic Fox and Aussie Opossum are some of the softest materials out there ( , but Antelope Hair is her top pick.
Fly tying apparently starts with texture preferences.

Back to Ole Reliable. These “Better Mop” flies catch a lot of bass for me. These colors can be bought at who also has and incredible stretchy worm material that is better for San Juan Worms than the traditional chenille. Worth giving them a look/follow.
