A very cool printed shopping list in book form made for whaling voyages that I ran into today at an auction; printed in New Bedford, MA around mid (19th) century. 167 gallons of vinegar, hot sauce, mustard, 1000 lbs of cod, and some medicine (rum, gin, brandy, port, madeira).

This copy of Tacitus (the 2nd edition after the first from 1473, but with the first printing of Agricola and other improvements; no printer, date or place, but Antonius Zarotus, Milan, 1487) was previously owned by poet C.W. Brodribb who wrote a poem, "The Incunabulum's Tale", about it. The poem is laid in and was published in The American Library Annual in 1908. He was obviously charmed by the bibliographer terms of art "sine loco, sine anno" (without place, without year). It's also sine nomine - without [printer's] name, but he didn't use that.

Tom Nealon's new book searches through patchy historical records to trace subjects like how chocolate helped lead to war in the Caribbean, or the role a grain fungus played in the Crusades.

I've been very lax here, but my new book, Food Fights & Culture Wars, which is a result of my love of old cookbooks, early books, and food, is out in the U.S., so I will try to at least point to a few bits of coverage where I don't seem too foolish or insane. Here's one: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/01/books/review/food-fights-and-culture-wars-tom-nealon.html

In “Food Fights and Culture Wars,” Tom Nealon presents a lavishly illustrated look at the impact of historical forces on cuisine.

I am bringing this chained binding to the Boston Book Fair (Fri-Sat-Sun) this weekend. A great thing, so very evocative of the moment when the middle ages slid into the Renaissance. The book is part 1 of book 3 of Florentinus: Summa Theologica printed by Nicolas Jenson in Venice in 1477.
