Fi****ms generally can’t be shipped directly to your home because U.S. federal law requires that most gun transfers go through a licensed dealer to verify the buyer’s identity and run a background check. These dealers are called Federal Fi****ms License holders (FFLs) and are regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives. To order a gun online, you typically choose the firearm on a retailer’s website, then select a local FFL dealer near you during checkout (many sites let you search by ZIP code). The seller ships the firearm to that dealer, not to your house. Once it arrives, the dealer contacts you to come in, complete the required paperwork and background check, and *if approved* take possession of the firearm. Some states have additional rules or waiting periods, so it’s always worth checking your local laws before ordering.
