Look at these incredible matching Malawi agates from yesterday's live!

Isn’t it crazy to think that as these formed over millions of years, the conditions in each little pocket were so similar they created the same colors in similar patterns.

What are the odds?

In the world of crystals and minerals, there is no shortage of information to learn. Every week we're going to bring you a fun fact, stuff you should know, or news from the industry.

Today we wanted to highlight Botswana agates! 140-180 million-year-old stones that serve up beauty with nearly every cut.

Named after the country where they're mined, Botswana agates are often greyscale in color and can have concentric, layered, or tubular banding. On the rarer occasions, you'll see them pop with red and other bright colors in a dramatic fashion.

Commercial mining of Botswana agates on a large scale began in the 1970s and the local government has since put regulations in place to keep rough material from leaving the country unworked. This promises jobs for the community and beautiful stones for the rest of the world. Now, the workers in the Bobonong district who have carved and cut these agates for centuries are able to process the material again.

Botswana agates through history were said to have been used by healers and midwives for fertility, to symbolize life force, vitality, and used in blessings to ensure healthy offspring.

You can get yourself some beautiful Botswanas in our live shows on Whatnot… just let us know if you’d like the referral code for $15 free dollars.

Hi! We’re Chris & Nina and we’re so happy you found The Agate Shop! If you like rocks as much as we do, then we’re going to be fast friends. We run agate cutting live-shows on Whatnot from our hometown Rosemount, MN… close to the agate mecca, Lake Superior.

And that’s how it all started– Chris, his dad, and Lake Superior. Well, technically it all started with Chris playing in the cornfield and finding cool stones he proudly brought to his dad. Turns out they were agates from Lake Superior. A little rock tumbler gift later, and a rockhound was born. He spent his whole life collecting and appreciating agates from the beaches of the lake.

Fast forward. After we got married we jammed all our skills together and leaned into Chris’ love of these little treasures. With a little help from technology we were able to start broadcasting a little rock-cutting party from our garage in 2019. The party grew! We found an amazing group of like-minded people who enjoyed the surprise of each stone as much as we do. That’s how our Whatnot live shows were born.

In the early days we only cut Lake Superior agates, hand-plucked by family members and Chris himself. Later we were able to expand our inventory to amazing finds from around the world, and Chris was able to quit his job as a Pipefitter and Welder to focus on the family business full-time in 2025.

His childhood dream!

Now, a true family business, we also have Kian, Chris’ son, helping us with the shows. His love of these breathtaking pieces of earth grows more every day.

Thank you so much for joining us on this journey discovering earth’s beauty. We’ll be sharing the best cuts from our shows, how-tos, behind the scenes clips, and more. We can't wait to show you what's on the saw next.
