After 35 years on the north side of the square, Gary and Mary are stepping away and passing the business on to their grandson Joe and his wife Sara.
I got to know Mary through committee work over the years, and that turned into a friendship I really value. She’s also been one of Bloomfields’ biggest supporters. I’ll never forget her coming in one day and telling me she didn’t bring her purse on purpose so she wouldn’t buy anything… and then asking me to hold a few things while she went back to get it anyway.
I jokingly call Mary “the Enforcer.” I’ve always said if I can’t… well… we’ll just leave it at that.
That’s Mary.
And Gary—he’s never met a stranger. Always smiling, always talking. I’ll always remember him rolling up with Santa and bringing a little extra Christmas cheer to our store.
That’s Gary.
Thirty-five years is no small thing. What they’ve built means a lot to this square and to this community.
We’re lucky it’s staying in the family. Joe and Sara have big shoes to fill, but I know they’ll do it well.
I’m happy for Gary and Mary, but it’s a little bittersweet too.
And no matter what, G & M will always stand for Gary and Mary.
