Tools! I have to admit to being dismayed at the demise of Pianotek, my go-to supplier. Reyburn Pianoworks now is carrying a number or high quality tools and supplies for the piano tech trade. Dean and Marty Reyburn were on wood scouting trip in September when we hit pay dirt. For woodworkers, lumberyards can be fascinating.

We located a new supplier for clear, tight-grain white spruce in Maine. This company cuts a lot of old growth timber to make large wooden beams for construction.

They had been saving the type of spruce we need, and will continue to do so for us. The load we got was about 670 board feet, enough for about 40+ keyblanks (after re-sawing and waste).

The material is perfect for us since it's flat sawn, tight grain and exceeding clear and straight. It was 2" thick so we have to re-saw and waste some, but well worth the trouble. Next stop, the kiln for a year, as it was just air dried previously.

We'll continue to purchase high quality blanks from Bolduc in Canada, but we prefer having two sources.

Since Kluge has dried up as a source (and many other materials), we're happy to have another. The last shipment from Kluge a couple years ago was less than ideal. Our minimum preferred growth rings per inch is about 10 to 12, the more the better since more growth rings means stronger keys. The wood that's going into new Kluge keysets in Steinways, Faziolis and other European pianos is not great at 6 to 8 growth rings per inch.

We have a new product! For many decades I've used set of Key Clamps (originally made by Bill Spurlock) when transporting piano keys without a keyframe. Our shop has re-designed and now builds what we believe is the best set of Key Clamps we've ever used. Some special features are not so obvious:
1. Spruce (key quality) makes them strong and lightweight.
2. The two parts are slightly convex so they clamp the keys in the middle with the same pressure as on the ends.
3. Sturdy Ecsaine leather handle means you can safely and easily transport a set of keys for key bushing or keytop replacement.
4. Grippy black neoprene that's long lasting and gentle on keys.

Here's a short video of the RPW Key Bushing Package in action.

We're showing bushing new keys here (before cutting) but the technique works equally as well on older keys.
The tools and techniques are also ideal for ironing bushing to ease them and reduce friction. A slightly lower heat setting is used for easing and ironing.

At Reyburn Pianoworks we use some newer key bushing techniques and materials most piano techs haven't seen. We've been asked about this so many times we're offering two packages with the specialized tools, material, instructions, and tech support to get you started. The advantages?

* Better quality job in less time. About an hour per rail bushing time.
* No hot glue pot to warm up or mix or make a mess.
* No failed bushings, we achieve 100% adhesion and zero hot glue globs to cause friction, or to scrape out.
* Exactly the correct amount of bushing cloth in the mortise every time.
* Easy and fast bushing cloth removal with heat.
* Preglued cloth is available from the RPW website or Jahn Pianoteile in Germany.
* A digitally controlled thermostat is essential for proper glue adhesion (don't even both with a rheostat, it won't work).
