At the time of its launch in 1958, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship to operate on the Great Lakes; it is also the most recent to sink with loss of life. The Fitzgerald was a powerhouse, often hauling large amounts of taconite and earning the title of “Queen of the Lakes.”

Join us on November 10 at Split Rock Lighthouse to commemorate the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald with a memorial beacon lighting, starting at 4:30 pm. The ceremony will be livestreamed on Split Rock Lighthouse’s page and the Minnesota Historical Society’s Youtube Channel.
