Jake Wildwood & Co

Jake Wildwood & Co Sales, repairs, and restoration of vintage and antique fretted and bowed musical instruments.

My business is a curious mixture of my repair work, blogging and photos, sales, personal interest, history, and blathering in and around vintage, antique, and curious old musical instruments. I mostly work on various guitars, mandolins, banjos, and ukuleles but also have an appetite for odd ethnic instruments from around the world and bizarre electric gear.

Brand new StewMac toy in the workshop meant time to clean up and organize!

Those deep lower shelves finally found a good use in holding neck resets in process rather than random junk. There are a variety of newer Martins down there right now from a morning session of pulling necks. I like working in batches… what can I say?

Now back to bed…!

This is a project for my friend Paul! It’s an old Harmony cutaway archtop of nice quality and I had already reset the neck and installed an adjustable truss rod some time ago.

The next step was pulling the frets and planing the board — the latter bit with filled inlay spots and a fresh and clean board is a step I forgot to photo…

At any rate, he wanted to attack it with mother of toilet seat so I cut a strip to fit, squeegeed a thin layer of epoxy all over it, and fit the pearloid (ahhhhhhhhhhhhhggggggrrrrrr)!

I’m using tape to keep it aligned and will then do final trimming later. The cauls for the clamps are actually radius sanding blocks which match the 10” board radius. The weird “bar” clamp thing with 2 clamps is just to suck down the trim on the fretboard extension’s end.

Tomorrow I get to refret it and set it up! Poor Paul has been waiting forever…

Thanks for all the kind words and worries! It was like a full-time PR job yesterday! 😂

I just started a fresh backup of the blog and there is now a standalone mini shop site so interruptions on the blog won’t mean you can’t see gear for sale.

Just what it says… what a pain!

If anyone has knowledge of how to talk to Blogger directly about this, please let me know. They are not transparent at all about how to get help with this other than raising one’s hand and clicking a, “you made a mistake!” button.

I have thought about migrating off of Blogger for years because of the lack of control but stayed loyal to the format because I have been doing it that way since the beginning.

Silly me…

Yesterday’s haul part three — cheap flutes and clarinets, Lee Oskars in minor keys (!!!), ubiquitous Hohners, and two of these odd learner-harp zither things in original boxes. This all looks like studio inspiration treasures to me…
