Stokes’ aster is one of the standout native perennials of the Southeast—and for good reason. 💜🌿

Known for its striking blue to violet blooms, this long-lived native begins flowering in late spring and often continues well into summer. The large, fringed flowers don’t just add beauty to the landscape—they provide an important nectar source for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators during a time when many spring flowers have already faded.

Beyond its ecological value, Stokes’ aster is an excellent low-maintenance choice for home landscapes. Once established, it is drought tolerant, adapts well to a variety of well-drained soils, and returns year after year with very little care. Its evergreen basal foliage also provides year-round interest, even when it’s not in bloom.

Plants like Stokes’ aster remind us that native landscapes don’t require sacrificing beauty for sustainability. By choosing species that naturally belong here, we create gardens that are resilient, support local wildlife, and become healthier with each passing season. 🌼🦋

Have you ever seen a milkweed seed before? 🌬️🌱

One of the most fascinating adaptations in nature is the way milkweed spreads its seeds. Each seed is attached to a silky tuft of fibers called a coma, which acts like a tiny parachute. As the seed pod dries and splits open, hundreds of seeds are released and carried by the wind, sometimes traveling surprisingly long distances before settling into the soil.

This strategy, known as wind dispersal, evolved to help milkweed avoid overcrowding around the parent plant and increase the chances of colonizing new areas. By spreading across the landscape, milkweed can establish new populations in places where sunlight, moisture, and soil conditions are favorable.

The ecological importance of this process is incredible. Milkweed is the only host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars, meaning monarchs rely entirely on milkweed to reproduce successfully. As these seeds drift and establish new plants, they create future habitat for monarchs and provide nectar resources for bees, butterflies, and many other beneficial insects.

What may look like a simple seed floating through the air is actually millions of years of evolution at work. 🦋🌿

It’s one of the first things to bloom each year. Which means it’s one of the earliest food sources for pollinators🦋
