A stronger athlete is a better athlete, and one of the biggest things you need to make sure is up to par is your posterior chain. Stronger glutes and hamstrings allow an athlete to run farther and jump higher. For the general population, they can also help reduce the risk of knee and hip issues.

If you’re looking for a solid finisher for your lower-body day and have SSF bands and a bench, give this one a shot. The heavier the band, the higher the tension on the exercise.

I’m not always a big proponent of stretching alone, but these banded distractions are a great way to loosen up areas that are holding a lot of tension.

Once you finish, I highly recommend following them up with strength and mobility work to reinforce the newfound ranges of motion you’ve created.

External rotation of the hips is key to a healthy squat, normal gait, and reduced lower back pain. But if you train at a gym that doesn’t have a seated hip abduction machine, how are you supposed to train and strengthen this ROM?

In my programming, I am a huge proponent of reverse sled drags for both warming up and lower body GPP work. But not every athlete has a sled or a place to pull one, especially when it’s cold outside. To solve this issue, we’ve been playing around with this banded substitute, and while it’s not a continuous motion, I give it an 8/10 comparability.

Hit these as either a warm-up or a finisher to your workout, for 4 rounds of 2 minutes of work with 1-minute rest. The heavier the band, the less distance you will be able to cover, but the harder you will have to push through the legs.

It’s starting to get warmer outside, and fellas, you know what that means? Short shorts!

But if you’ve been neglecting your hams this winter, no worries, because we have some banded variations that can be done for high reps and get you all the hypertrophy needed to rock those shorts on the boardwalk.

This alternative is a great finisher to hit at the end of a leg workout for 3-5 sets of 10-20 reps. Remember, the heavier the band, the higher the tension during the exercise.

If you’re dealing with some cranky elbows, have you assessed how tight your triceps are? Both the biceps and triceps insert in the elbow and most times when the elbow isn’t happy, the biceps are the culprit. But if all your soft tissue work to this muscle is yielding comfort, check the triceps.

An easy way to work them out to see if your elbow feels better is to use this setup above. If they are the issue, you will feel it as soon as you place your arm on the bar. Make sure that as you move through the ROM you are taking it nice and slow while also rolling the arm side to side. This is a great exercise to add into your warmup before your next upper body session. Perform 1-2 sets of 10-15 reps and have at it.
