Setting boundaries can often cause discomfort, but empathy does not equal responsibility. You can understand someone’s feelings. You can care about their pain without making it your job to fix it. You can acknowledge your part without taking on what isn’t yours.
Empathy says: “I hear you. I understand.”
Responsibility says: “I’ll own what’s mine.”
You do not have to abandon your boundary or carry the weight of their emotions to make them comfortable. You are responsible for communicating your boundary with care, not how someone may respond to it.
