The Barkin’ Basement Named Ridgeland’s Business of the Month.
The Barkin' Basement was formed in October 2013 to benefit the Jasper Animal Rescue Mission. We are "JARM d/b/a Barkin" Basement." They are a 501(c)(3) non-profit and 100% of the store's proceeds goes to JARM. The store was conceived by Mary Elise (Horry) Gabbard and Marcia Carey. The store is operated by Carmen Malphrus.
Last year, JARM reunited 132 animals with their families, spay and neutered 196 feral cats and released to safe outdoor environments, 445 animals were placed in forever loving homes, 589 animals were transported to partner shelters and rescues across the country. We load animals in a van and drive them all across the country so our animals can find their forever homes! The employees are absolutely devoted to taking care of lost, abused, abandoned animals. Truly a labor of love!
They have two cats who live at the store, Helmut and Dixie (Dixie Girl!) They have a cult following! Kids come here just to hang out with them and pet them! We also sometimes have kittens in the store that are available for adoption. It's a tremendous amount of fun for everyone who stops by and visits the store. People like to come hang out in the store, and through this it provides a unique atmosphere to visit and meet other members of the community. A design and social mecca in Ridgeland!
Business has really started to pick up in the last year as the local community has supported us tremendously! We operate pretty much word-of-mouth as we only advertise in The Treasure Guide. Local folks donate to us and buy from us - they are pretty much our only customers! So THANK YOU - We are eternally grateful for that support! Also, other charities in Hilton Head and Bluffton donate to us, so we are able to offer a variety of items: home accessories, furniture, computer items, pianos, sewing machines, fabrics, linens, tools, elder care items - pretty much everything except clothes!
Additionally the Barkin’ Basement is promoting a storewide 50% off the entire store sale for the week of the Fourth. Sale ends on July 7th.
