Ok, truth be told, there are not a lot of perks in bookselling - but there is one benefit that makes us so happy when we receive packages from the publishers - advance reading copies (ARCs)!
We can read books before they’re published and that opportunity makes this crazy business so worthwhile and helps guide our front list buying!
Two novels I recently read and loved (both publishing in October) are Partita by Barbara Kingsolver and Peck & Peck by Bonnie Garmus

Bonnie’s debut novel, Lessons in Chemistry, was a best seller and was made into an excellent Apple TV series. Her second novel is just as wonderful and I highly recommend it!

We always expect the best from Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver and with Partita, she doesn’t disappoint. My all-time favorite Kingsolver book is still The Poisonwood Bible, but for music lovers, I think Partita might be a new favorite.

Both books thrilled me and I didn’t want them to end. You can pre-order both at the store.

The Ridgefield Art Walk 2026 opens this Friday, 8/21! We’re pleased to be showing the beautiful work of tina.sturges in our windows this year. We’ll be open Friday night until 8 pm and we’ll have wine & cheese, conversation and Tina’s paintings & prints for sale. Meet the Artists continues on Saturday from 12-4, and all work will be exhibited through 9/6. Please come and join us for this fun annual event!

This is Darwin’s second time as a member of the American Booksellers Association adult , and he has rarely been seen without a galley in hand this Summer! A group of 8 American Booksellers Assoc. members from all over the country were tasked to read galleys of 61 books submitted by publishers, both large and small, all written by debut authors. The 61 books were divided among the members who read at least 50 pages of each. They then narrowed down their selections and most of the remaining books were read in their entirety. The group will vote to select the final 10 books by the end of August. Those selected will be included in the Indies Introduce list for 2027!
The last time he served, the final list included Annie Hartnett for Rabbit Cake, and amyliptrot for The Outrun!
Independent bookstores are truly dedicated to helping readers discover new authors and to help debut authors find their readers. The American Booksellers Assoc. Indies Introduce program is a big part of that effort! And our cat, Jack, was trying to help! 😹

This may be the usually quiet month of August for publishing, but we have some fabulous new books published this week, including signed, first editions of The Amateur by Chris Bohjalian, A Tender Age by Chang Rae Lee (Darwin’s pick!), Sunrise by Téa Obreht, and Under the Falls by Richard Russo!
