MCM Gerald Thurston for Lightolier green table lamp, American, mid 20th century. Green enameled metal base with a fluted frosted glass torchiere shade and moulded plastic shade rests atop. Light wear on shade. Rewired.

20.25 x 7.5 inches without the plastic shade. Plastic shade is 5.5 x 17 inches.

💡Yep, it’s the real deal! Offering an original Ingo Maurer giant Bulb (Opal) in absolute mint condition (opal is no longer in production). Electric plug has been converted for US outlets. German made with murano glass. law

From the Museum of Modern Art: This design, called simply Bulb, announces very clearly its function. What Ingo Maurer is so brilliantly doing is taking the common light bulb and making us look at it again by changing the scale of it. It’s actually a light bulb within a light bulb. And it was part of an art installation, but was so popular that it actually encouraged him to set up his company to meet the demand for this product.

This is the design that really launched the career of Maurer, born in Germany and trained as a typographer and graphic designer. He had moved to the United States and become immersed in the Pop culture of the early ‘60s. So it looks to Pop culture in this playful engagement with changing the scale, but also looking to this particularly German tradition of distilled, reductive forms.
