Hey folks, I want to thank everyone who came out for our large item sale a few months back and provide an update. Gizmo recovered from his surgery, and I picked him up later that day. It was touch and go with a blood transfusion, and he temporarily lost sight in his remaining eye, but it came back a couple days later. Thank you all for sharing your pet stories and well wishes.

We accomplished what we set out to do: remove the tumor, give him relief, and keep him comfortable so we could focus on his CHF meds and hopefully get a few more months with him. You all visiting Smalls helped that happen. He rebounded well, but we knew the tumor could return, and it started to about six weeks later. I spent my birthday weekend with him on the couch a few weeks ago, but ultimately said goodbye to him a couple days later on Monday, July 13th, as his CHF progressed over that final weekend.

My wife and I took him around the country in 2019, and we loved every minute of it. That trip eventually led to starting Smalls a couple years later, so we could do it again, but building a business takes time, and we never got to repeat that trip with our original pets.

Gizmo got us outside and got me into photography, and I'm grateful for both that and his time with us. I think a lot of us love our pets with everything we have, and when they pass, we turn to another and love them just as fully. We keep doing this because those bonds matter so much, it's part of what drives us to care for something and make their time here better.

We had our first error within our Boutique offerings being shown online which is still why its in soft launch. A nice customer came in looking for a specific item listed for sale in our Boutique list that he was browsing from home (https://smallsrva.com/pages/in-store-inventory)

Unfortunately, that item had been sold a few days prior and not marked as sold in the system by an employee. This is a rare occurrence but one staff will be trained to double check and an additional morning check will be put into place for review. With a public facing sales list like this we do want it to be 100% accurate but mistakes do happen.

Please continue checking the page out! We do have way more boutique items going up over the next few days, anything newly added is marked at the top of the page!

We've got some website updates to check out: www.smallsrva.com

Two new things, both in soft launch:

Mystery Boxes are now available! Order online for shipping anywhere in the country, or pick up in store. We currently offer two sizes, each packed to the top with general merchandise.

Large Item Inventory is also now up on our site. These are pieces too big for the store floor, so we've built a storage system in back to offer them at great prices. For now, they're available in store only, just ask a staff member and we'll bring the item out for you to check out and buy.

Honestly, these have been two problems since Smalls opened six years ago: how to rotate out inventory, and what to do with oversized items. We've tried pop-ups, liquidations, deep discounts, all worked, but all took a ton of labor. Until we can expand, floor space is just limited.

Mystery Boxes, Large Item Inventory, and our boutique list are our attempt at solving that ourselves, a new way to browse, find deals, and help us clear out storage.

See something that catches your eye? Come visit us in store to snag it! It's the perfect way for our regulars to stay up to date on what's new, and we'll even be utilizing web-only discounts exclusively on the site so it pays to check back. 👀

Merchant's Walk Shopping Center has grown by one more restaurant! Very excited to share that Yummy Red Bowl: Mongolian Stir Fry & Sushi https://www.yummyredbowl.com/ is finally opened! They have a Father's Day Gift Card giveaway event from $5-$100 for purchases over $20 until June 20th.

A lot of our staff have visited and it is delicious. It provides a much needed lunch option for employees and is very quick to serve. We can not express how exciting it is to have a fresh food option that we can walk to in a quiet sit down atmosphere or you can easily take your food to go.

Please share this post as this is another locally owned business and it is very nice inside as well as worthy of your time, attention, and money. For lunch, about $15~ a person with leftovers to spare.

What’s this? A sneak peek at our brand new Boutique Price Checker Web App? 👀

This is something I (Andrew) started building just last week as a replacement for our staff boutique management sheet, but honestly, it’s something I’ve thought for years would make life easier for both customers and staff.

Here’s how it works:

When you’re browsing the boutique, just scan a nearby QR code to bring up the app on any mobile web browser, search the case or wall section you’re looking at, and quickly see the item’s price along with helpful details like size and other important info.

But here’s the part I’m really excited about and feel is a game changer for regulars.

Save the link and check it anytime to browse new boutique arrivals from the past few weeks, complete with a photo and pricing, even while at home. See everything with a discount. See everything in a category of your interest. On our end, staff can monitor ageing items better and apply discounts more readily that only are seen on the app instead of a physical sticker.

A quick note: this is not a web store. There’s no login, no cart, and no online checkout.

It’s simply a smarter way to browse our boutique inventory both mobile or on a desktop. When you find something you want, just let a staff member know and purchase it at the register.

My hope is to launch this soon in a couple weeks once we completely check over the boutique and populated all the images and information to ensure accuracy from the start.
