“Start with pieces you genuinely love – things that bring you joy or hold meaning. Don’t overthink it or try to force a collection to look a certain way based on trends or expectations. The most charming collections evolve naturally and reflect your personality, rather than a pre-defined aesthetic. If it speaks to you, it will find its place – and in doing so, it will add character to your home.
A collection is meant to be shown, you want it to give your home personality, so when starting and building your collection ensure that they are pieces you can easily work into the rest of your home's decor and style.

Don’t rush it! Let your house speak to you. The best interiors are curated over time – they grow and change with you, and that’s what gives them depth and soul. Your home should evolve with you, and a thoughtfully built collection helps tell that ongoing story in the most beautiful way.”
- Henriette von Stockhausen, Creative Director at VSP Interiors

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… creating and telling that on- going story is such a wonderful way to spend the summer months. A little travel, a little unexpected finding, a little buying, a little decorating, a little revising, a little sitting back with a satisfied (for now) sigh and taking it all in; home really is the best place to spend the summer.

I’ve been doing a little bit of it all, so the shop is in a constant whirl of change with new finds coming and going. It is a joy to share the moment of discovery with all of you as you compose the next line in your antiquing story.

“It’s not about new flashy flags everywhere—it’s about vintage flags, distressed wood signs, ticking stripe fabrics, and antique finds that tell a story. Think mason jars with mini flags or a faded bunting across a barn door. It’s cozy patriotism with soul”.
- Shreya Dalela, The Creative Hour

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques…whether you are looking for that “show-stopping” antique center piece that makes you want to stand and salute (such as a WW2 Boosey & Hawks drum), or the little vintage details that complete the oh-so-patriotic picture (a pair of Abraham Lincoln Brass & Granite Bookends), or another piece of Johnson Brother’s blue and white Americana-themed dinnerware (such as The Friendship of Salem pattern), you’ll find plenty of good old “patriotism with soul” at Gleaned Antiques.

Open and keeping antiques real in the Uptown Center, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, 10am to 4pm this week. Friday this week is reserved for gleaning in Walla Walla.

“There’s something magical about stepping into a space where past and present coexist in harmony. Vintage and antique items bring warmth, history, and character to contemporary interiors in ways that mass-produced items simply cannot. As someone who designs both gardens and interiors, I’ve found that these timeless treasures transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones with rich stories to tell.” -Katie Ann, Casolia

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… coexisting with antiques that celebrate American history is lifting spirits and making decorating for the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America’s Semi quincentennial a pleasure. In house, inspiring Americana finds are represented across collecting genres including photography, dinnerware, commemorative souvenirs, folk art, books, figural pottery, hand-colored prints, toys, political pin-back buttons, loom woven coverlets (including one 1848 signed and dated woven coverlet), and military uniforms… all with the patina and gravatas that only true age bestows.

Open and keeping antiques real in the Uptown Shopping Center Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
P.S. Come in and grab a flyer for Shady Lawn’s Outdoor Vintage/Antique Show which will be held in Walla Walla on June 12th and 13th. Free admission both days!

“There’s a quiet shift happening in how we decorate with heritage Americana decor. Less about the obvious, and more about the collected pieces that feel as though they’ve lived in a home for generations rather than appeared for a single season. With Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and America’s 250th anniversary ahead, antique stores are one of the best places to find pieces that bring real history into your home.

The hunt for authentic Heritage Americana Decor requires a discerning eye and a bit of patience, looking past the mass-produced and toward items that possess genuine age and storied textures. At places like antique stores, the goal is to identify those foundational pieces, the heavy stoneware, the hand-loomed indigo, and the weathered wood that serve as the anchor for a sophisticated summer home. As you walk the aisles this season, keep these key historical elements at the top of your sourcing list to create a look that feels truly collected over time.”

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… just back from Tucson, Arizona, where I enjoyed an extraordinary experience on the set of Antiques Roadshow in Old Tucson. Tucson is steeped in Old West history, and I was able to immerse myself in incredible examples of Heritage Americana Décor in the museums and antique stores. Of course a few Tucson treasures gleaned from the antique stores followed me back to Washington State!

This week Gleaned is welcoming in Summer with a mix of antique Americana, and bringing the heat with spicey Mexican/ American vintage décor stirred together with plenty of vintage red, white, and blue to honor and celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary of Independence. The 1940’s Bradley’s Pies store display from Portland, Oregon, is as vintage Americana as apple pie! The store is packed with “foundational pieces”, as well as unique, historical and patriotic themed elements that will make decorating your home for a summer of hosting homegrown festivities a breeze!

Open Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4 pm while keeping antiques real in the Uptown Shopping Center.

“I’m all about ‘the cozy home’. I think rooms should exude warmth; I love color and layering and I’m a believer in an 80/20 approach. Blending 80 percent vintage with 20 percent new sets a lovely balance in interiors and helps to make a home feel unique, curated, and evolved over time. With any well-curated space, the aim is to set the scene of how you wish to live.

Incorporating antiques into your home can create an indulgent, calm, and inviting space that values longevity over short-lived wow factor.” -Nadine Finnegan, Interior Design

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… in the shop (an Antique Shop after all) we take the approach that 99.9% of our stock is antique or vintage, so it is easy for customers to find something remarkable to add to the 80% antique/vintage vibe in
their collected-over-time home.

This week Gleaned is open and keeping antiques in the Uptown Shopping Center real on Saturday only 8am to 3pm. Back to regular hours next week.

“Antiques and vintage pieces usually survive for one of three reasons. They are either very beautiful – far too beautiful to be dismissed and replaced. Or they are much loved and hold a significance too strong to ignore. Most of all, they are so solidly well made that they have survived the various slings and arrows of time and wear.

The vintage-hunter’s jackpot is finding a piece that is all of these three things. In a practical sense, it is a testament to the wisdom of the original craftsmen that their creations can be passed down through generations. The sturdiness of dovetail joints or the artistry of a scalloped Knapp joint took time and skill to learn, as well as an understanding of aesthetic value. Creating a lasting legacy out of great beauty? There is great wisdom in that.”
-Paula Sutton, Hill House Vintage

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… an antique and vintage lover’s jackpot is an apt way to describe Gleaned’s inventory. Gleaned is well stocked with American oak furniture, antique table lamps, electrified wall scones, and floor lamps, a set of four iron, patinaed French bistro chairs, vintage paintings and prints, vintage brass figures, MCM barware, stacks of antique leather-bound books, Florentine boxes and trays, antique gathering baskets, antique clocks, Gesso framed mirrors, wonderfully tarnished silverplate candlesticks, a small collection 1930’s-40’s Storybook dolls in their original boxes (just in), and Johnson Brothers dinnerware in the classic pink and white Haddon Hall pattern. If you are wisely creating “a lasting legacy out of great beauty” in your home, there are plenty of choices to aid you in your quest at Gleaned Antiques.

Open Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm because there is great wisdom in keeping antiques real in the Uptown Shopping Center.

“A weathered door…or an old piece of discarded wood with age and character…place it upon a rusty…chippy…worn vintage sewing machine base and you have something heavenly! Drape it with ivy and terracotta pots with a touch of patina and you feel like you fell into a fairytale. Imagine and your new potting bench is not far away!

So, if you need a place to baby your plants…place your freshly cut flowers and make a beautiful arrangement…maybe root your favorite plant…there is an upcycled potting place waiting to be born. Think of a wonderful base and something that would make you smile as a top…maybe some shelves or an old cabinet…add them together and see what you get…I think you are going to experience some magic of your own and you will have one happy garden!” -Andrea, The Cottage Market

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… May is the beginning of potting bench season! If like me, you put your potting bench “to bed for the winter” in mid-October, you know the joy of “pulling back the covers” in May and rediscovering all things antique and vintage potting bench from seasons past. In the present it is always a joy to scout around for new antique and vintage garden-garnishes; aged terracotta pots (especially the hard to find ribbed Garden City variety), little rusty wheelbarrow or garden carts, wire racks for showcasing McCoy or Shawnee pottery planters, glass flower frogs in rainbow colors, and watering cans of all makes and models (adult-sized galvanized, child-size tin lithographed…), old trowels and gardening forks with flecks of paints still clinging to their handles, as well as salvaged one-of-one architectural pieces that will add that touch of uniqueness. Gleaned is well stocked with aged potting bench accessories so as you wake up your garden from a “long winter’s nap” stop in.

Adding daily to our stock of the kind of garden-garnishes that keep antiques real in the Uptown Shopping Center; Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 3pm.

“Collections of antiques are not meant to be too “designed”- they are adaptable – not only does a collection evolve over time, a collection will captivate you no matter where you display it. Your only job after you purchase an antique piece that has stolen your heart is to display it to be admired and/or used. When I am on a buying trip for French Garden House, I follow these rules. Do I love it? Is it interesting? Does it tell a story? I scour markets for interesting, fine quality pieces to add to the collections I sell. These treasured finds are conversation starters, unusual décor accents that tell a story of days in the past filled with human endeavors very like, but at the same time different than, the days we have now.

Whatever piques your interest, and makes your heart beat faster, I encourage you to start collecting! Creating a space at home surrounded by the things you love is one of the best ways to express yourself. It doesn’t matter how big or small your home is, or how perfect. It’s not about perfection but about creating a place that feels authentic to you and to the people you love, about designing a ‘canvas’ for your life that evolves as you do.”
-Lidy Baars, French Garden House Antiques

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques… I follow much the same “rules” as Lidy Baars when I’m combing the booths at an antique show or the wares offered t in an estate sale. Adding to our shared philosophy is my unwavering, self-prescribed decree that “IT” must exude that indefinable cachet that only true age defers on an object. This internal dialogue paired with my increasing heart rate guides me when something intriguing such as a folk-art piece or an original painting comes into view. Cachet has been my constant companion this Spring, so stop in soon while selection is at its best.

Offering an ever-evolving canvas of the good-old-stuff is keeping antiques real in the Uptown Shopping Center; open Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm.

“I love old things. Whether it’s a hundred- and fifty-year-old farmhouse, a dusty hardcover book or simply a rusty old nail. I am fascinated by the idea that objects – like people – have a story that has brought them from their beginning to wherever they are right now.

Antique and vintage decor and furniture is no exception. I’ve always paired interior design with antiques. Even when I was a kid I had small pieces of furniture or knick-knacks in my room from days gone by. I always say it comes from my mom, who took me to farm auctions as a kid and filled our house with all kinds of vintage and antique wares.

And just to be clear – I’m not talking about super expensive, “fancy” antiques. By antique and vintage I just mean something old. Not fake old like brand new furniture and decor pieces that are roughed up so they look “vintage.” I mean, why buy something that looks old when you can buy something that actually is? Especially when the new vintage-inspired pieces can cost way more than the real thing! My main advice for decorating with antiques and other vintage-y items is that they need to blend into your space, not stand apart from it.” -Larissa (self-proclaimed tree hugger) at Of House and Trees

Meanwhile at Gleaned Antiques…this time of year I might be a self-proclaimed lilac hugger! From the frothy white variety called Syringa vulgaris ‘Angel White’ that emit a heavenly scent, to the over-the-top heirloom variety from the 1890s, Syringa vulgaris ‘Congo’ that produces deep wine-red flowers that are as fragrant as they are pretty. The oldest known lilac in cultivation is a Japanese tree lilac (Syringa reticulata) specimen at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts. This particular plant was planted in 1876 and is recognized as the oldest living lilac in the arboretum’s collection. No wonder lilacs look so self-assured in antique infused environments, yesteryear is their home turf!

While I agree with Larissa, “why buy something that looks old when you can buy something that actually is”; if you can’t abide the scent of natural lilacs, don’t worry this is the time to head to Hobby Lobby or shop small and local at Shelby’s Floral for an arm full of luscious faux lilacs that will marry up with your antique vessels whether they are iron stone pitchers, weathered galvanized buckets, Roseville pottery vases or antique gathering baskets. Regardless of your style, elegant sophistication, or rustic and earthy, using your antique containers in new and interesting ways as you bring blooms (real or faux) indoors is a game changer. Individualizing your Spring vignettes is a blast when using antique vessels, such as old, chippy, ice cream-maker buckets (filled with the blooms you want to hug) to set the mood on your porch, dining table or kitchen counter. At Gleaned this week my faux lilac blooms are spilling out of 1930’s tin containers with original pastel paint and decals without triggering anyone’s allergies! Paired with a chippy wicker side table, a 1950’s turquoise General Electric clock radio, and a couple of pink enamel baby bathtubs, the vibe is definitely chill and distinctively poignant. Just in a stunning 1960’s kidney shaped mahogany lady’s desk with drawers galore and a glass topper which will guard against water stains regardless of the blooms you style on it in your favorite antique vase.

The aura of lilacs and antiques is keeping antiques real at the Uptown Shopping Center this week; Gleaned is open Wednesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
