First day out to check early season truffle production and Georgie found some promising quantities for this early in the season. It is challenging to predict how the upcoming season will turn out, but due to a forecasted El Niño (drier and warmer winter) we know that there is an increased chance of reduced truffle production. Ultimately, reports from the field will tell us how productive the season will turn out, but until then, Georgie’s day out today is promising. We faced heavy rain during our hunt and got drenched! Oh well… just part of the experience 😀

We are excited to announce that starting this winter, we will have a seasonal space at the new Renton Market! Details are still in the works and expect to learn more in the weeks to come. Our booth will feature an education station so the community can learn about and interact with our native truffles. We will also offer limited “as available” native truffles for sale and our signature truffle oils (where you can sample). There is also a community kitchen / learning space that we will offer educational classes both about fungi (truffles and potentially others) and cooking with them. We are so excited to be part of Renton’s new market space and hope to add value to the community that visits! Follow our page to be notified when we have dates and more details on what to expect. We hope to see you there!

We spent the summer preparing a small area on the wild Truffière for introducing some young Douglas Fir trees and the time finally came to do the planting! I talk about some considerations and expectations I have when attempting an inoculation of Douglas Fir trees from Leucangium cascadiense spores and adding them to the property. Enjoy!

What have we been doing during the summer off season? Well… clearing a large section of the property to prep for new plantings over the next two seasons. This is one of those unique areas on the property with an open canopy to allow adequate sunlight for new seedlings. There is still more work to be done over the next few weeks 😎 The goal is to add 30 new inoculated trees over the next two years.

Today, we want to introduce you to our wonderful sponsor, Konifir Truffle Co Aaron and his truffle dog, Georgie, are a pair full of passion and heart. As an Afghan war vet battling back pain, Aaron finds the process of truffle hunting healing in many areas of his life, and he attributes a lot of the healing to Georgie’s role as his companion.

Through Konifir Truffle Co., Aaron and Georgie strive to increase education and awareness of the exceptional quality of Pacific Northwest truffles and help drive the growing local truffle culture by encouraging and engaging in dog-harvesting practices only.

Thank you for supporting NATGA, Konifir Truffle Co., We love how you find a joy in the art of truffle hunting that extends beyond the wonderful truffle itself!

We checked the property of a fellow mycology student and found a lot of Tuber gibbosum (Spring White Truffle)! They also have an old Christmas tree farm that looks perfect to check out next season! If truffles are there, Georgie finds them! 😎

Opossums are opportunistic mycophagists, that is, they will eat fungi if the opportunity presents itself. 🐿️Animals help spread the spores of truffles, so we placed some Washington black truffle out and a couple trail cameras to record any movement around the truffles. Look who appeared 🐾😳 seems like this lucky opossum had quite the fine dining experience 😂 Well, opossums can travel up to 15 miles between multiple dens so when this opossum is ready to “discharge”💩the spores, it might not be on the truffiere, but that’s the way things go sometimes!
