“But how does the Outside Sale work?”

On Mondays we reset with fresh books — just $1 EACH.
- The first photo is Monday afternoon this week.
- We add more books every day, and usually have around 10,000 by Wednesday/Thursday.
- The last photo is from yesterday (Friday).
- On Sundays, you can FILL YOUR OWN BAGS FOR JUST $5/BAG.
- Then Monday we start the whole cycle over again with fresh books.
- We also have new books that were damaged or overstock at other retailers, still $1.

You’ll find everything from 2024/2025 bestsellers to kids books with creased covers, older nonfiction without dust jackets, and even 100-year-old books - sometimes that are literally in pieces. Most are in very good shape, and it’s definitely a treasure hunt.

The sale runs ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, ALL YEAR — weather permitting.

SELLING OR DONATING BOOKS?
- During buying hours (9–11am, Monday–Thursday only), we buy what we can use in the store and the rest can go to the Outside Sale.
- Typically, we pay $.20 each for comics, Blurays and vinyl records (except not Classical music as we usually have more than people want to buy).
- We don’t pay for books we know are going straight to the $1 sale.
- At the Donation Station outside, to the right of the entrance, you can get help to unload books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl, board games, puzzles, and more (Just a heads up — we’re not a real nonprofit. But we try to be awesome in all the ways!)
- Thank you so much!!

Anyone who comments with photos of treasures from Grassroots gets $5 OFF ANY PURCHASE. Use the secret code, “I helped you on social media for $5 off.” Only through this Wednesday, limit 1/person. Also, thank you so much!

A FREE book for everyone! Show us this image on your phone, and choose a FREE book from our $1 Outside Sale.

This week’s Outside Sale is huuuuge! We have comics, nonfiction such as jazz books, and more than 10,000 books total. They’re DIFFERENT BOOKS FROM WEEK TO WEEK because we start over after $5 Bag Sale on Sundays.

Also, did you know that most students and even teachers have NEVER EVER been to Grassroots Books? We offer Free Book Cards for everyone, including staff.

Alice Maxwell Elementary is getting in on it! Their kids will learn how to use a bookstore and swap books with their friends.

We are rooting for all kids in our town to develop good skills. It seems like HALF of 20 year olds CAN’T WRITE a basic business email.

Limit one free book/year/person!

Also, we have stickers for people who want to help with a NEW LITERACY NONPROFIT!

…We are seeking people to be in the core team and launch team. The idea is that kids who are low on cash can select books. Contact Zoe at [email protected] or 775-848-8781.

…Also, bring kids for free books tomorrow and the next day - let us know at [email protected].

UPDATE: Donate in person or with this link: https://square.link/u/NiFMQKXN

ALERT: Some POM-POM LEGEND in a shiny 2000s Ford Focus just sprinted into our bookstore and SNATCHED our entire “Give A Kid A Book” jar.

$13 vanished faster than his dignity. If he had any in the first place.

If you recognize this MICRO-VILLAIN (or car), please report to Reno Police — case #260103121.

And feel free to get his photo printed on a coffee mug… or dartboard. Bonus points if you use it as a target for throwing knives. We won’t judge. Except - bruh - duuuude!

But hey, we’re not letting it ruin the day.

Let’s turn this dirty deed into a full-blown BOOK GIVEAWAY event.

That jar is basically “pay it forward”, except instead of buying the person behind you a coffee, it gets BOOKS FOR KIDS. Books that they actually want to read.

So we’re launching the $13 ANTI-VILLAIN CLUB.

DONATE $13 OR MORE to the Give A Kid A Book Fund, and we’ll hand you a glorious commemorative sticker in the next week or so.

HERE’S GOOD NEWS: We can still help kids get a book they love! Bring kids who are low on funds! We’ve got a STORE FULL of books to pick from.

Planning to bring 10 or more kids? Email [email protected] so we can make it happen.

ELITE ANTI-THIEF TIERS (for any book donation legends out there)
$169 (13²) Tier - Wings of Fire dramatic standing photo op + private midnight release party for you and friends. We’ll even let you “steal” bookmarks without feeling like a criminal.
$2197 (13³) Tier - Full Book Heist Experience: We give you a cape, dramatically reenact the dirty deed in slow motion, and invite a bunch of kids to load up on free books
$13,000+ or “Sponsor a Foster Kid Book Avalanche” Tier - We’re still brainstorming the name (this idea is literally hours old), but expect legendary status, naming rights, and enough books to make the original thief’s Ford Focus look like the world’s saddest clown car by comparison.

Got better name ideas? Hit us — we’re all ears.

Who’s joining the Anti-Thievery Club and helping us make this honestly-rather-pathetic stunt the best thing that ever happened to our book fund?

(Also, everyone still gets a Free Book from our $1 Outside Sale, limit one/year. That’s a different gift from us. But also, we’re only keeping pennies in the donation jar now. As soon as we see there’s $1 in the jar, we drop it.)

Also, to the 300 or so people who already paid it forward, we adore you!

April is Local Authors Month, and we have 100+ books. Some new releases are selling like hotcakes: “In the Glow of the Sierra” and “In the Shadow of the Sierra” by Tami Force and “Finding Nevada Wild” by Sydney Martinez. Discover gold mines, wagon trails, forgotten graves and more.

Many books are still looking to find their first home, and we love them already. Some are:
- “Time Pencils: A Novel of WW2 and the Cretan Resistance” by Lola Katherine Giusti
- “Unfinished Business” ( a murder mystery taking place in 1969) by Ken Sutherland
- “The Fate of the Americas: The Cuban Missile Crisis and the Hemispheric Cold War” by Renata Keller

There are three endcaps for your browsing pleasure, with new books arriving and getting restocked.

Local authors: if you would like your book here, find the link in the comments (or on Instagram on our story highlight labeled Local Authors).

(We had been planning to host an event kickoff on April 1, but are not able to to this year).
