Mindpower Gallery Welcomes Abacela Winery for a Special Evening of Wine, Music & Conversation

Some wine evenings we introduce you to great wines.

Other nights we introduce you to the people who changed wine history.

On Friday, August 7th, Mindpower Gallery is honored to welcome Abacela Winery to Reedsport for an extraordinary evening featuring acclaimed wines, live music, and the opportunity to meet one of the world's foremost authorities on wine and climate.

From 4:00–7:00 PM, guests will enjoy a guided selection of Abacela's celebrated wines while meeting Dr. Gregory V. Jones, CEO of Abacela Winery and internationally recognized climatologist whose research has helped reshape how vineyards around the world understand the relationship between climate, terroir, and exceptional wine.

Long before Abacela became one of Oregon's most respected wineries, the Jones family approached winemaking differently. Rather than asking where to plant grapes, they asked a scientific question:

"Where in America does the climate most closely resemble Spain's Rioja?"

Years of climate research led them to Oregon's Umpqua Valley, where they established Abacela and helped introduce Oregon to world-class Tempranillo. Today, Abacela is internationally recognized for pioneering Spanish varietals in the Pacific Northwest while producing award-winning wines that express the unique character of Southern Oregon.

Dr. Jones has spent more than twenty-five years studying the interaction between weather, climate, grape growing, and wine quality. His work has taken him around the globe as a researcher, professor, speaker, and advisor, making this an uncommon opportunity to learn about exceptional wines while hearing firsthand the fascinating science behind them.

Adding another special dimension to the evening, guests will enjoy live music by Liz Jones, whose performances create the perfect backdrop for relaxed conversation, great wine, and an inspiring evening inside the gallery.

Where Art Meets the Vine

Tonight begins a new Friday evening tradition at Mindpower Gallery.

Over the coming weeks, we'll welcome some of Oregon's most remarkable vineyard families—not simply to showcase their wines, but to share the stories, history, and craftsmanship that have helped shape Oregon's wine culture.

Our first featured guest is Girardet Vineyard & Winery, one of Southern Oregon's pioneering vineyard estates.

When Philippe Girardet planted his first vines in 1971, he wasn't just starting a vineyard—he was helping build what would become the Umpqua Valley wine region. Raised among vineyards in Switzerland, he recognized something special in Southern Oregon's hillsides and became one of the early visionaries who believed world-class wines could be grown here.

The Girardet estate is still family-owned today. Their vineyard is dry-farmed, pesticide-free, and rooted in ancient marine soils formed millions of years ago—an environment that gives their wines a remarkable sense of place.

We'll also hear the story of Baco Noir, the rare grape Philippe introduced to Oregon more than fifty years ago. Today it's one of the Umpqua Valley's signature varietals, and Philippe's generosity in sharing vine cuttings earned him the nickname "The Johnny Appleseed of Baco Noir."

And if you've ever wondered why Girardet has a wine called Touchdown Red, ask Kristi about the day Marc Girardet safely landed his airplane on Interstate 5 after an engine failure—a remarkable story that became part of Oregon wine folklore.

We're delighted to welcome Kristi from Girardet this evening to share these stories, answer questions, and introduce guests to one of Oregon's longest-standing vineyard families.

Whether you enjoy history, agriculture, Oregon heritage, beautiful art, or simply learning something new, Vintage Nights are designed to celebrate the people and places behind our state's remarkable vineyards.

You are cordially invited to attend the opening reception of the Coastal Photographic Art Expo exhibition, taking place tonight from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served, and a no-host bar will be available. The exhibition will be on display through July 24th. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday.
