The word is out and we wanted to let everyone know some more details. Old Mill Market is going to be closing as a café, on Sunday, June 29th. This has been a decision in the making for the past year and the timing finally seems right.
A note from Christina:
The decision to close the cafe was not one that I made lightly—it took nearly a year to come to, and it has not been easy. I truly love the business I’ve been running for the past 11 years, and these last 7 years in Georgetown have been incredibly special. I am SO grateful for such an amazing and loyal customer base, many of whom have become close friends over the years. You have helped shape this business into the beautiful café it has become. Your input, encouragement, patience, humor, and loyalty have grown a small business into a flourishing community. For that, my staff and I are eternally grateful.
It’s your faces, your smiles, your stories, your laughter, your tears, and your support that have made this such an incredibly difficult decision. But as hard as it is to say goodbye to all of that—and to all of you—the time has come for me to move on to my next adventure.
Two years ago, I went back to school to begin working on another degree. I closed one side business (a wholesale baking company) and started another (a dog walking and pet sitting company). I also began exploring a possible career shift—from a 27-year career in restaurants and hospitality to a new path in conservation and environmental studies. I found myself longing for more time in the woods and less time in the kitchen.
So, I got involved with more volunteer work in this field of interest, which led to many questions about my future. Mainly: Did I want to continue on my current path, or shift gears and try something new?
As you may have guessed, I’ve decided to give something else a go. With my lease coming up for renewal this summer, I realized that if I committed for another few years, I might lose the courage to make this change—and regret it later. So, I’ve decided to give myself the gift of time and take a break from my career in food to explore these other interests.
Over the next six months, I’ll be focusing on life beyond the café. I’ll continue with my dog walking and pet sitting business, which has grown from a part-time endeavor into a full-time job. I’ll keep furthering my education in this new field and continue my volunteer work. I’ll also spend time nurturing the creative parts of myself that haven’t had much room to breathe in the past decade. I’ve returned to freelance writing, painting, and sculpting—joyful departures from the daily stresses of running a brick-and-mortar business.
While the long-term future of the business—and my career in food—remains uncertain, I do plan to dabble a bit after taking a little break. I’ll be sure to keep everyone updated as things unfold. For now, we’ll be closing the café format of the business on the 29th. We’ll take about a week to get organized, then reopen for part of July, serving coffee and baked goods while transforming the café space into a tag-sale-style shop.
Thank you again for your loyal support and patronage over the years. It has touched my heart in ways that words can’t fully express. My team and I hope to see your smiling faces at least one more time before we move into this next chapter. Business hours remain the same through the 29th, and if you have any questions, please feel free to call or stop by during that time.
With immense love and gratitude,
Christina
