We are back!!

Every year, we head to Winona State to watch the BIR students graduate. However, this graduation was very special...

Jason was honored as the 2026 Outstanding Alumni! He had over 15 nominations for this award from fellow technicians across the country. We are now trying to find a good place in the shop to showcase this awesome award!

We also got to watch our instructor, mentor, and very dear friend lead the students to the ceremony. John Huth has been a staple in the BIR community for 39 years. He has helped Jason and Zoe form into the people they are today, and we are so excited to see where retirement takes him. We are also glad he won't be far away, for his buffing machine lives in our shop so he will be forced to visit when he needs to shine up a project.

This concludes the 2025-2026 school year! Zoe had an amazing time teaching the woodwind students and is beyond grateful for the opportunity to work with such beautiful individuals. She is back at the shop full time and we are very eager for summer repairs!!

Important Shop Update:

It's Zoe again! My bench looks a little different in the mornings now πŸ€”...

Many know I have been an adjunct instructor since January 2026, my role is just temporarily changing. With Brian off enjoying family time, I will be keeping his bench warm and welcoming as the full time woodwind instructor.

What this means for Red Wing Music:
Don't worry, I'm still chugging away on all your repairs. Jason is currently running the show and taking in woodwinds for me to look at after school. I have comitted to working 4pm-9pm as many weekdays as I can manage as well as working weekends. All incoming repairs are still by appointment but I can still easily manage quick fixes within 48 hours.

I apologize for some longer wait times as I have to make sure I stay physically and mentally healthy to provide the best me that I can to you, the students of MSCS, and my family. This is an incredible opportunity for me and I am honored to help guide the next group of students to graduation. I am very lucky to have an amazing support system at the college, the shop, and home. Thank you to everyone and your continued patience is appreciated more than I can express. Once graduation happens in May, I will be back to my normal(ish) schedule.

We hope Brian and his wife melt into all the baby snuggles and enjoy life moving forward as a beautiful family of four! ❀️

Bass Flute Overhaul!

Zoe here! A few weeks ago, I finished a project that I have been working on for months. This is a vertical bass flute! They are pretty uncommon so being able to work on this was a really fun experience. This flute had multiple felt pads that had been replaced with leather pads. The previous tech also unsoldered the spuds to be able to float the leather pads, similar to a saxophone. While this repair method works, it was just not a good fit for this particular situation. The customer wanted something that would be easier on her joints and had found it really hard to get her low notes to speak. So, we decided to go back to felt and order custom bass flute pads that are very firm to remove the squishy feel the leather was giving.

Along with having to order custom pads, Jason made custom tone hole tools that I used to level, bevel, and chamfer the tone holes. This creates a sharper edge for our new firm pads to lay. He also made a replacement spud after we noticed one was missing. I resoldered all the spuds back in place, faced the spuds, removed all key play, leveled pad cups, replaced all pads and materials, and spent countless hours making this flute sing again. Brian James DeGayner also helped by collaborating and making a tool for my spud facer!! You will notice the two videos even show how much play the mechanism had in-between their posts. All of this movement causes the keys to shift and makes it nearly impossible to level pads. Oh! I also got to cut all my partial shims by hand because I couldn't get any shims large enough for this kind of flute!

It's hard to really show just how much care, precision, and time went into this repair in a few photos.

This was definitely my most challenging repair so far but it was a really fun project! I really do have the best customers that give me the time to challenge myself and become a better technician. Forever greatful for the love you show our small shop and the joy your music brings to others ❀️

Hi everyone, it's Zoe! Wow what an exciting new year it has already been! I have a few updates about why I have been so busy recently!

Before getting into that... COME TO THE SWAP MEET! This Saturday (Feb 28th) 8:30-4:30 at Minnesota State College Southeast. Lots of vendors with instruments in various states of playability. I personally will be selling tons of pro level trumpet mouthpieces! Come check it out!!!

As of January, I am now an adjunct instructor at Minnesota State College Southeast! It is an incredible opportunity that I am very proud of and greatful for. I teach on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons but still chug away on my woodwind repairs outside of class.

I just got back yesterday from a really fun work trip! I was invited to Western Iowa Technical and Community College to present a clinic to the current repair students and other talented technicians who came out for the event.

Brianne Snitker from SSE Music and I drove down together where we made a slight detour to Vermillion South Dakota to visit the National Music Museum! We had been wanting to visit since 2018 and were so excited to finally make this happen!!
