An early remembrance of Paul DeBoer.

Paul was working at the gas station at the bottom of the hill in Bruce.
I had gotten a bike for my 12th birthday. Later, Paul decided to make our version of a chopper type bike. He took a hacksaw to the frame of my bike just behind the handlebars and bent it back. He then took some electrical conduit, pounding two of them onto the front forks of my bike. Voila- chopper bike.
I was game for the first test ride.
I rode the bike to the top of the hill towards the cemetery.
I turned around and made my best attempt for a speedy descent to Main Street in front of the gas station. As the road leveled out, my center of gravity was too far back.
The bike spun out from under me resulting in me landing on my stomach on the pavement in a basic arms forward Superman flying position.
Good thing I was young as I don’t recall any lasting injuries.

When you’re biking through our well-loved bike paths this spring, we invite you to think about how biking found a place in Minnesota. In this week’s episode of Minnesota Unraveled, host and historian Dr. Chantel Rodríguez explores the evolution of the bicycle in the late 19th century, as well as the boom in cycling infrastructure that followed.

With the help of our guests José Luis Villaseñor, Peter Bird, and Peggy Prowe, we embark on a ride through the history of cycling, uncovering how biking transformed mobility for both women and people in rural areas of the state.
