Concho Belts: From Shells to Silver

Long before silver ever reached the Southwest, people across the plains and deserts of North America were already making beautiful adornments from what the land provided. Shells, bone, and polished stones were shaped into discs and ornaments that hung from belts, hair, and clothing.

Come see our complete collection of Native American Concho Belts including some New Arrivals or visit us online at chimayotrading.com.

Larry Bell and the Magic of V***r Drawings

Larry Bell has spent decades pushing the boundaries of what art can be, and few works capture his vision better than his v***r drawings. These pieces feel almost like captured light itself, delicate and shimmering on the wall, inviting you to look closer and lose yourself in their subtle play of color and form.

Chimayo Trading has a new Larry Bell v***r drawing on display and ready for a new home. Stop by our gallery in Ranchos de Taos to see it in person, photos do not quite do it justice, or visit us online at chimayotrading.com.

New Arrivals from Poleyestewa

Chimayo Trading has just received new kachinas from Polyestewa, the well known Hopi carver who is inspired to continue the life of some of the rarer kachina identities. Poleyestewa’s kachina dolls are crafted in the traditional style, reminiscent of those made in the early 1800s. Unlike modern kachina carvings that often feature exaggerated motion and intricate detailing, his work emphasizes simplicity and authenticity, with arms tucked close to the body and carefully considered adornments.

Rediscovering B.J.O. Nordfelt:
A Wanderer’s Brush with Modernism

Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt (1878–1955), better known by his adopted artistic name B.J.O. Nordfeldt, remains one of the more restless and multifaceted figures in early 20th-century American art. A Swedish-born immigrant who embraced the spirit of modernism while charting his own independent path, Nordfeldt refused to be pinned down by any single style, school, or locale. His career spanned continents and artistic movements, from post-Impressionism to bold expressionism, always driven by a deep curiosity about place, light, and human experience.

We are thrilled to present a standout work from the final chapter of one of American modernism’s most independent voices: B.J.O. Nordfeldt’s “Carrying the Dead Christ” (1954). Come to Chimayo Trading in Ranchos de Taos to see it in person, or visit us online at chimayotrading.com.

Charles Reynolds~ Beyond The Canvas

In the vibrant mid-20th-century art scene of Taos, New Mexico, Charles Henry Reynolds (1902–1963) stood out not only as a skilled landscape painter but as a multifaceted creator whose hands-on talents extended into wood working, working as an Indian trader running a trading post and art gallery, and community building. While his realistic oils and watercolors of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Pueblo life earned him a place among the later interpreters of the Taos art colony, Reynolds’s life reflected the practical ingenuity of many Southwestern artists who balanced creative pursuits with entrepreneurial endeavors.

New Arrivals from one of the last undiscovered Taos artists Charles Reynolds, are now available at Chimayo Trading in Ranchos de Taos or online at chimayotrading.com.

Squash Blossoms: From Spanish Pomegranates to Southwestern Icon

Few forms of Native American jewelry are as instantly recognizable as the Navajo squash blossom necklace. With its graceful strands of silver beads, flower-like ornaments, and crescent-shaped naja pendant, the squash blossom necklace has become one of the defining symbols of Southwestern art. Yet its story is not solely Native American, nor solely Spanish. Instead, it is the result of centuries of cultural exchange, adaptation, and artistic innovation.

Come visit Chimayo Trading in Ranchos de Taos or online at chimayotrading.com to see our extensive collection of Squash Blossom necklaces, including many New Arrivals.
