Did this Mac Daddy last summer using cedar 2x wood separated by concrete segmental wall units ....then this Spring knocked out the 3 tier pea gravel filled planter ledges for same customer..... Now under contract to build another 3-tier food garden planter using cedar 2x then 3 radius dry stack stone walls built into the slope for 2 more food gardens

Kelp meal is now in! An excellent organic stimulator additive @ 1 # / 100 SF. Our garden is now 100 # prep complete just waiting on soil microbes to do their thing and some rains to activate and release these micronutrients! Grow Organic!

All you organic food garden freaks out there who love to grow highly nutritious produce on your property...... It ON like Donkey Kong!!
Spring cool season veggies are NOW! Prep your food plot: weeding and old plants removal, tilling if necessary, or rough up with a hard rake the top 5" or so of soil, add any well composted organic matter, add organic fertilizers, add kelp meal for minerals, rake it all in and let sit for 7-10 days getting 2-3 thorough waterings to activate fertilizers helping maximizing seed germination.
10 days later plant transplants or sow your seeds, lightly mulch down to completion.
Our favorite mulch component is on site leaf mulch or leaf mold
Have at it , kids!

Organic food gardening year round.... My hardest season to deal with in food gardening was... FALL, as confusion set in trying to figure out how to go from Summer favorites blasting away and the 'Desired Planting Time' for the cool season veggies, using the SAME space!!

Easiest solution is have a large garden space for your family to clear out rows or smaller SF areas, amend the soil ready for new plantings. Then just work areas after the Summer plants start dying from first freezing night so you end up with staggered planting dates and eventually the whole garden becomes your Fall cool season green leaf garden thriving in your on site compost soil variations
It may look slightly ugly in a pic but ultra nutritious in your stomach!!

Been on several properties where the food gardens all look weak, and our goal is to help Heath conscience food garden enthusiasts grow highly nutritious produce. Why the paltry plots? Knowledge! First, a producing healthy food garden needs 6+ hours sun per day, next if you are using a raised bed you need a minimum of 9" soil depth, a 2x6 raised bed on top of your hard pack area will not cut it! Besides air and water the actual soil quality is a major factor, pump in organic matter as much as possible. The way you know things are not right I'd look at your plants, if they are spindly, leaves yellow, insects attacking.... Things are not right! With the arctic blast here upon us in NC right at the Spring planting time for Central Piedmont....no worries as the soils were workable before these record low temps this past few days so after this mini arctic snap is over (Saturday) get back to your plot and work the soils, add organic matter, organic fertilizers(but wait another week to seed or transplant as fertilizers need to be broken down and absorbed by the soils- 2-3 waterings during that week) and use the week to plan out your green leaf bonanza. End of April is Summer planting and remember it is ideal to have a minimum of 9 inches of loose soil so if you do a raised bed where the fill is less than 9 inches, just work down into the existing soil 4-5 inches....as typically plants have 2 sets of root systems, one that goes deep and one that hangs out under the surface to lap up colloidal minerals. Our recommendation if you have to use alot of new soils for fill and you do not have any composted materials on property like a bin or heap.... go to Logans and get the Bumper Crop bags. It's expensive but thee best organic matter from a bag! Like 9 different composted components!

I knew well over 15 years ago that growing your own food (ORGANIC) would be the future health ticket with the cost savings verses going to the organic section of the grocery store and paying sometimes double for your produce...but these days Whole Foods' Organic fruits and veggies really are not that expensive so really consider letting go of the conventional produce or at least review the Clean 15 list for conventional produce with minimal toxins!

A study shows that those who eat organic food have 65 percent lower levels of pesticide residues than those who eat the least amount of organic produce.

And the season begins.... (Spring, Summer, Fall) Get your very own organic food garden built... turn-key! A-Z you just watch then reap the benefits! Look for an area that gets 6+ hours of sun per day, typically facing South to Southwest. Use $3-4 per square foot for a ballpark price. Spring is Green Leaf so get those cool season plants/seeds in NOW! Update: looks like we will have approx. 12-15 1-yr. asparagus roots available after planting our asparagus bed (had to downsize original plot) so we can put in a nice 2 row asparagus bed for you!
