County Executive Aisha Braveboy has rejected Prince George’s County’s newly approved $6 billion budget, arguing that numerical and clerical errors left the spending plan out of balance.

According to WJLA, the issues stem from amendments the County Council made involving the transfer of funds from the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to various community programs. Braveboy says the numbers in those changes don’t add up correctly, requiring the council to come back and make corrections.

The budget had already faced delays before finally being approved. Now it’s headed back for another round of revisions.

At a minimum, it is fair to ask how a budget this important made it to the finish line before these issues were caught.

A second free grocery store is opening in Prince George’s County.

The new District 7 Fresh Market will open June 8 inside the Spauldings Branch Library in District Heights, giving eligible residents access to fresh produce and pantry staples at no cost. The market is expected to serve up to 100 residents and their families each week.

The initiative, led by Councilmember Krystal Oriadha, comes just days after a similar free grocery market opened in Fairmount Heights, where demand was so high that a waiting list quickly formed.

About 12% of Prince George’s County residents are considered food insecure, making access to healthy food a challenge for thousands of families.

For all the debates about development and big projects, sometimes it’s the smaller quality-of-life initiatives that can make the biggest difference for families. What do you think of this idea?

Happy shout to Gary Russell Jr.!

A proud Capitol Heights native, Gary Russell Jr. is one of the most accomplished boxers ever to come out of Prince George’s County. A 2008 U.S. Olympian and former WBC Featherweight World Champion, he held the title from 2015 to 2022, successfully defending it five times. Known for his lightning-fast hands and elite technical skill, Russell also helped establish one of boxing’s most remarkable family legacies, joining brothers Gary Antonio Russell and Gary Antuanne Russell as world-class fighters developed under the guidance of their late father, Gary Russell Sr.

Happy shout to Christian Darrisaw! A proud product of Upper Marlboro and Riverdale Baptist School, Darrisaw has become one of the NFL’s top left tackles. He signed a four-year, $113 million extension with the Minnesota Vikings in 2024—making him one of the highest-paid linemen in league history. After a major knee injury last season, he’s grinding through rehab and aiming to return to form as the anchor of Minnesota’s offensive line.
